  2. El observatorio de Arecibo • Located in Puerto Rico, is the largest one plate telescope in the world. It measures 305 meters in diameter. With the help of the telescope, scientist have discovered planets.

  3. La Costa de la Habana Cuba • Is full of modern hotels and skyscrapers, meanwhile buildings and streets of old Habana are in need of repair to conserve their colonial history. This contrast between modern and antique is common in the Caribbean Islands.

  7. El Alcazar de Colón • Was constructed in 1509 following his arrival to Santo Domingo by the governor Diego Colón the son of Christopher Columbus. Alcazar was the castle of Diego Colón.Today Alcazar serves as a museum. Each one of the twenty-two rooms is furnished with historical and antique pieces.

  8. Eleutherodactylus Iberia • The smallest frog in the North Hemisphere the Eleutherodactylus Iberia, was discovered in the tropical forest of Cuba in 1996. Only measures a centimeter, which makes its name three times longer than its body.

  9. Hurracanes • Each year, people from the Caribbean live with the possibility of a big destruction caused by tropical storms. Floods, electrical failure and destruction of homes occurs frequently, as seen here in Habana.

  10. Economy of the Islands • Traditionally, agricultural products, like banana, pineapple, sugar and coffee that you see in this photo of west Cuba, were the primary exports of the Caribbean. Today the economy of the Islands has diversified to include technology products, textiles and medical equipment.

  12. Pre-Columbian Period • The taínos settled in the Great Antilles more than two millennia ago. They hunted small animals and they cultivated harvest like yucca, corn, pumpkin and peanuts. The Caribs, an aggressive tribe that had conquered the smaller Antilles tribe, attacked the taínos frequently. Investigate the distance between the Greater and the Lesser Antilles.

  13. Cristobal Colon • Arrived in the Island of San Salvador in the Bahamas in 1492 and took possession of the archipelago (group of Islands) in the name of the Kings of Spain.

Siglo XVI • In the XVI century the Spanish constructed forts in Puerto Rico, Cuba, La Hispaniola, and Cartagena de Indias to protect themselves from the attacks from Holland, England, France and a variety of pirate groups.   15. 1500-1880 • Boats full of slaves from providences of the African continent crossed the Atlantic Ocean and arrived in Caribbean Islands changing the demographics of the Islands. African heritage transformed artistic, literary and cultural expression of the region. How is this influence is seen today in the Caribbean? This influence is seen in the music and the food of the Caribbean.

  16. 1822 • In 1822 the Haitians invaded the Dominican Republic and took control of the island for twenty-two years. La Trinitaria, a revolutionary movement thought of by Juan Pablo Duarte, was essential in obtaining Independence for the Dominican Republic in 1844. • What is the name of the island that is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic?   17. 1898 • Spain lost the Islands of Puerto Rico and Cuba to the United States in the Hispanic-North American War of 1898. Covered with armor from Spain, la Infanta Maria Teresa, left defeated from the port of Santiago Cuba, marking the end of the colonial period of Spain.   18. 1899-1953 • Regiment 65 was founded in 1899, it was a infantry group comprised of puertoricans that voluntarily fought in the first world war on the United States Side. They also participated in important campaigns in the Korean War. Four soldiers from the regiment received the Cross of Distinguished Service and 124 of them received the Silver Star.

  19. 1959 • After Fidel Castro took power in 1959, millions of Cubans took refuge in the United States. Between 1965 and 1973 more than 260,000 Cuban refugees arrived in the United States. In the decade eighty was a departure of a large number of people in boats. La flotilla de Mariel brought more than 125,000 Cubans to the coast of Florida.

  20. El Arte Precolombino • Los Tainos impressed the Spanish with their complex and rich culture. Pots, jewelry, furniture and other pre-Columbian artifacts is found in the Museum of the Dominican Man in Santo Domingo. • Why do you think the Tainos used this furniture? For religious ceremonies.

  21. Artesania Colonial • The elaborate sculptures made from fine wood are very typical on the Island of Puerto Rico. • Why do you think wood is used so much in artesian work of Puerto Rico? Wood is used a lot in artesian work because it had a special value since pre-Columbian time.

  22. 1880 • JunglaCubana was painted by the Cuban artist Esteban Chartrand (1840-1884). Educated in France, Chartrand was a modern painter for his tropical landscapes reflecting the European romanticism. • What looks “romantic” to you in this picture?

  23. 1893 • In El Velorio, painted by the puertorican Jose Francisco Oller y Cesteros, they celebrate the death of a child with dances. But also one sees the profound sadness of the family. • Why do you think that there is a celebration and sadness at the same time? There is sadness because of the death of a child, but death is also celebrated in some cultures as part of the cycle of life.

  24. 1940 • The rooster is one of many pictures with the same protagonist, the rooster, painted by the Cuban artist Mariano Rodriguez (1912-1990) in the 1940’s. Mariano as he was known, considered his work were more expressionist than abstract because to begin his work he observered the reality of the objects.

  25. 1950 • The Cuban artist Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) studied art in Madrid, Spain. One can see the influence of surrealism of Pablo Picasso in this work, Rumblings of the Earth (1950).

  26. 2000 • The picture CuatroVientosby the Dominican painter Ramon Oviedo (1924-) is an example of contemporary abstract art.

  27. 2002 • Oscar de la Renta, native of the Dominican Republic earned his fame in the modern world working in the house of Elizabeth Arden in New York.
