  2. Before • George Herbert Bush Was a son of a Senator • He joined the navy and piloted a B-52 bomber in WWII • After the war He joined the Texas Oil industry

  3. Campaign of 1988 • George Bush started he campaign in 1988 against Michael Dukakis • Through the election he was not the popular vote, but ended up winning the election in 1989 • He won 40 states in in the electoral vote • Began looking toward a political career

  4. Dying of Tensions • Bush was the creator of many useful foreign policies • Tensions between both sides of the “Iron Curtain” finally died out in 1989; the first big accomplishment of his presidency • Starting in 1970 Poland was slowly falling apart; but in 1989 Poland elected their first freely elect4ed president

  5. Fall of the “IRON CURTAIN” • In 1989 the Berlin Wall torn down, demonstrating the end of tensions in Europe • Bush introduced the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty • “The Cold War is now behind us…” Said, Gorbachev (first president)

During the Persian Gulf… • In 1989 the Chinese army attacked protestors marching for a reform for democracy • War began in 1989 against Panama and ended in 1990 • In 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait • In 1991 a series of massive air strikes called “operation Deserts Storm”, was launched by U.S. forces

  7. Troubles at home • Many detested Bush’s choice to appointed the 1st black judge named Clarence Thomas • Budget deficits forced Bush to break his promise to not raise taxes • In 1991 the jobless rates sky rocketed to 7% • Gas price also increased
