  14. ESE Department Safety Meeting Slide# 14 ESE PC Account & Password Policy changes • Proper Use Banners are already in place. • Each user should have his/her own account. Generic Accounts are being disabled. • Remaining Users are Required to use : • Complex Password Structure • Increased security against hackers • Periodic Expiration • Period = 6 Months • Why do this? . . . . . . .

  15. ESE Department Safety Meeting Slide# 15 ESE PC Account & Password Policy changes We all signed the Fermilab Policy on Computing ( http://www.fnal.gov/cd/main/cpolicy.html ) It is quite specific : "Fermilab employees and registered users (who have been issued an ID number) are responsible for their own actions under the computer security policy, as well as for the actions of any person who they permit to access a Fermilab system." and then "Individuals are implicitly authorized to access accounts in their own name, and to alter or delete data in those accounts, and they may access files which are enabled for reading for a class of individuals including the person attempting to access them. The burden of proof of authorization rests with the person attempting to access an account; possession of a password is not proof of authorization.” Monday Sept 13th 1999

  16. ESE Department Safety Meeting Slide# 16 ESE PC Account & Password Policy changes These 2 paragraphs from DOE/Directorate imply : • Letting others know your password isn’t against the rules, but . . . • Letting others know your password is permitting their access to a Fermilab system. • Since you permitted their access you remain responsible for their actions. This is OK as long as you really trust those you share your password with. • Periodic Expiration keeps this sharing down to a required minimum, hopefully zero. • Complex Password Structure inhibits hacker losses. 19. ESE Department Safety Meeting Slide# 19 Safety: Epilepsy • Diagnosed ~25 years ago, I periodically remind others. • Classical Shivering Shakes? No! • Every muscle turns “on”; I go stiff, exhale (scream), and faint. I can not swallow my tongue. Do not attempt to insert anything into my mouth. Often I bite my tongue, but any bite damage has already happened. In a bit my muscles relax. Incontinence. • 20 minutes later, I regain consciousness. • I don’t recognize any warning signs, if there are any. I’ve been told my speech becomes nonsensical immediately prior. It has only happened when I’ve been very very overheated. No saunas or steamy showers or marathons. • Just ease me to the floor if possible and call x3131. They know what to do. 26. ESE Department Safety Meeting Slide# 26 ESE Dept. Safety Manual : • Reflects the recent Lab-Wide Re-Emphasis on Safety Issues • Not an implication that we were being unsafe, but that we need to establish a formal paper trail. (easier said than done) • D.O.E. visit scheduled for late September

  27. ESE Department Safety Meeting Slide# 27 ESE Dept. Safety Manual (continued) • MSDS’s in Right-to-Know Centers (on-line later) • The Dept. Safety Manual is on-line, still a draft, still reflects the differing styles of the differing authors. • We welcome constructive comments. • Reviewed by various Fermilab Safety people • You are ALL responsible for • taking the necessary time to study this manual, and • following the intent of this manual • You’ll all receive the URL by email, and a Safety topic will appear on the (new) ESE Home Page.
