Aboriginal Pedagogies • Aboriginal Pedagogies centres on the notion of ‘Learning through Culture’. • “8ways” is a pedagogy framework that allows teachers to include Aboriginal perspectives by using Aboriginal learning techniques. • Working in Aboriginal Pedagogies will allow you to explore your own personal cultural identity and bring you to a productive and equal dialogue with Aboriginal cultures.

The 8ways framework is designed to be localised so that local cultural realities are informing teaching and learning. • 8ways is a constantly developing body of communal expertise held by the traditional keepers of knowledge in Aboriginal communities throughout western NSW. • The knowledge used to develop the Aboriginal Pedagogies framework is owned by the Traditional Owners of our land.

  6. WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? • Aboriginal Pedagogies is a course that is centred around the notion of “Learning through Culture”. This course will allow you to explore your own personal cultural identity and introduce you to 8ways of teaching and learning that can be incorporated and used in every classroom to engage students in their learning.

The Aboriginal Pedagogies is a framework that is designed to be localised dependent on the location so that in each setting it is used the local culture has an influence and an impact on how it is used. The Aboriginal Pedagogies is a framework that was developed by Dr Tyson Yunkaporta through his university doctorial research, Aboriginal pedagogies at the Cultural Interface. The knowledge used to develop the Aboriginal Pedagogies framework is owned by the Traditional Owners of our land.

  8. Module 1:8 ways Introduction/refresher workshop. • This module is a dynamic workshop that introduces (or revises) the 8 ways of Aboriginal Pedagogy framework. It demonstrates how to teach through culture, rather than about culture. Module 2: Cultural Orientation • This is a reflection session that helps teachers to identify and analyse their own personal cultural orientation to learning.

Module 3: 8 way competency training • This session is a powerpoint presentation with discussion Q&A session that explores the 8 ways pedagogy framework in detail and explains the research, literature and theory behind it. • Module 4: 8 way wiki session • This module explores the 8 ways wiki and how it can be used to influence what happens in the classroom each day. Resources, teaching strategies and many other things will be explored in this module.

  10. Module 5: 8 way unit planning session. • This is a collaborative planning session in which teachers are supported to include a planning unit using Aboriginal Pedagogies and design lessons based on Aboriginal Learning processes.

Aboriginal Pedagogies • In 2013, 1700 teachers and numerous community members, across 47 schools from all 7 school education groups in Western NSW have participated in the delivery of the Aboriginal Pedagogies Course (APC) and implemented this in their schools. • There are now over 2000members of the 8ways wiki – 8ways.wikispaces.com • The Western Region, Regional Aboriginal Education Team (RAET) has delivered the APC to regional staff and school staff in the Hunter Central Coast, Riverina, North Coast and Illawarra South East Regions in primary and secondary schools. • The APC has been delivered to government and non-government agencies from within NSW and in Queensland and Western Australia. Impacting on higher education from Perth all the way through to Thursday Island and the tip of Cape York.

  12. Message Stick Activity On your message stick you need to include: Examples: • Your family and/or • Why you chose teaching as a profession. • Show how you support your students in your KLA/Classroom. • What your KLA area is or what you do for your students. • Your Cultural background.
