Gamewell-FCI 600 Series SmartScan Fire Alarm Control Panels Recall

Gamewell-FCI issued a recall for 1,100 units of their 600 Series SmartScan Fire Alarm Control Panels due to a software issue that could cause the system to fail. No incidents were reported, but customers are being contacted for a free firmware software upgrade.

Product Recall • What: Gamewell-FCI 600 Series SmartScan Fire Alarm Control Panels [5] • Recall Date: July 27, 2007 [5] • Why: There was a concern that the software in the alarm system might fail to recognize when it needs to be serviced because of a buildup of particles that could cause the system to fail. • Incidents: There weren’t any reports, but due to previous incidents, this issue was caught before any damage was done. • Number of Units Sold: 1,100 units at $400-$3,500 • When Sold: These were sold between October 2004 and May 2007 ETM 627 Raven Malone - Gamewell-FCI 600 Series SmartScan Fire Alarm Control Panels November 30, 2014

Management Issues • Recognition of Problem: There was not a stated reason as far as how they found out that there was a problem, however, there was one reported incident from a recall in January of that same year. • Speed of Response: The response time was pretty fast when compared to other companies. It took them three years to recognize the problem. • Responsibility: Gamewell-FCI is contacting customers directly and providing a free firmware software upgrade. Impact of Recall • Legal Consequences: Because there were no reported incidents before the recall, there were no lawsuits. • Reputation: The incident had little to no effect on the reputation of Gamewell FCI. • Sales: Sales were no effected, in fact, Gamewell FCI is still used in major businesses such as Marriot, Beverly Hills City Hall, many Universities, and USPS. It appears as though they are now double checking their software since they have not had to issue another recall since 2010.
