  2. Sustainability • nowadays seen as a global concept built over three main considerations: Economic Social Environmental

Climate protection • Protection of resources (water, energy, etc) • Biodiversity • Organically growth food (no pesticides) • Minimize pollution and wastage • Seasonality of products • Develop local communities (buy local) • Equal rights • Fair trade • Better education opportunities • Fighting poverty and prosperity for all

  4. Demand for Sustainable Tourism • Most consumers will not ask for more sustainable options - they expect the tourism provider just to do it! • A 2012 report by The Travel Foundation found that 75% of consumers want a more responsible holidays

  5. Keys to become a Green Hotel • Reducing water consumption • Reducing electricity and fuel consumption • Reducing the amount of waste generated • Minimize the use of disposable containers and use only recyclable or biodegradable products • Compost food coming out from the kitchens and restaurants or producing biogas • “Buy local” • Develop good relations with the local community • Implement a communication system to maintain guests informed about environmental practices and ensure they support them during and beyond their stay.

Green washing • It is important to define a clear communication strategy to show to potential and existing guests concrete actions being undertaken towards sustainability. • Ensure your actions fall clearly into a specific category • Explain in details what are you doing to obtain an official green certification if you do not already have one. • Be transparent.
