Reading1 • Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. • SMP 1 • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • S and L1 • Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. • SMP 6 Attend to precision: Mathematically proficient students try to communicate precisely to others. • Writing 1 • Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. • SMP 3 • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  8. Making Sense of Problems What does __________ mean? How would you describe the problem in your own words? What is this problem about? What does ___________ want to know? What do you think about what __________ said? Do you agree? Why or why not? How would you explain the same answer but in a different way? What are we supposed to do? What is the question(s) asked? What helped you determine that is the question to answer? What DOK level is this problem?

  10. Annotation is a note of any form made while reading text. • “Reading with a pencil.”

  11. Collaborative Conversations Accountable Talk • By providing students with a frame, they have a scaffold to fully explain their thinking and propel the conversation to deepen their understanding. Accountable talk can/should take place in all content areas—explain proofs in math, analyze data from scientific experiments, engage in arguments in history, explore textual references in literature, etc. This discourse sharpens students’ thinking by reinforcing their ability to use and create knowledge.
