  1. Model Groundwater distribution and networking system • Objective : • To distribute potable water to 500 families in the arsenic affected areas of South Bengal. from underground sources. The water will be obtained from a treatment plant based on subterranean arsenic removal technology (SAR) at an affordable cost.. • Following assumptions were made for designing the distribution network • 500 families • No of members per family 4-10 • Water used for non irrigation purpose • Supply pattern : 3 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs in the evening Demand side management Assuming 500 families and considering number of members varying between 4 to 10, predicted population is 3469. Water requirements are for 1) Personal hygiene 2) Cooking and drinking 3) Others Assumption: arsenic free water will be used for cooking and drinking purposes. Assuming average water requirement would vary between 25lpcd for a family of 4 to 20 lpcd for a family of 10 for cooking and 5lpcd for drinking Total water consumption will be 388763 litres/day = 388.763 m3/ day Assuming 10% loss in the system, total requirement for the day is 431m3/day = 87 m3/ hr Based on peak demand in summer and assuming arsenic free water distribution for cooking and drinking, costing calculation is as follows:- Other costs Pump cost Rs 75000 (i/c motor) Associated piping Rs 50,000 Plant life : 10 years Salvage value Rs 1000 after 10 years, Considering simple straight line depreciation, the depreciation value comes to be Rs 12400/ annum. Maintenance cost Rs 2500/ annum. Operator’s cost : Rs 24000/ annum. Total cost = Rs ( 178200 + 12400+2500+24000) = Rs 83450 / annum = Rs 18092/month Water cost per family per month = Rs 36.
