  1. Global Education An Administrators Guide Chris L. Knott J.Y. Joyner Center for Spanish Language/International Baccalaureate Magnet Elementary

  2. Why Global Education is Important • Social Importance - The Great Melting Pot - Cultural Respect and Awareness - Reinforces Core Character Values • Economic Importance - Global Industries - Competition - Global Interdependence

  3. Why Global Education is Important • Educational Importance - Understanding - Internationally competent citizens - Best Defense against Organized Ignorance

  4. Lessons Learned • There is no substitute for “engagement” and “involvement”. Having people of different cultures share and discuss with students is “priceless.” • Similarities just as important as differences. • Global education can, and must, be integrated into the curriculum. • Be careful about relief efforts. They must be well-planned and students should understand and respect the culture.

  5. Our Global Initiatives • Operation Belize • International Education Week • Columbian Classroom Initiative • Heifer International Project • Individual Classroom Skyping Projects • Spanish Integration • Latin Cultural Performances

  6. Operation Belize • Started as part of our 3rd grade Communities Unit. • Grew into a schoolwide effort to improve the library and recreational offerings at Grace Primary School in Belize City, Belize. • In April, six staff members flew to Belize to deliver the materials, do staff development for the teachers, and work with the children.

  7. International Education Week • Presenters from all over the globe come in to share their cultures with our students. • Students take part in our International Parade and represent their culture. • Activities to promote International Awareness are amped up this week. • Teachers use Culture Kits from UNC to provide artifacts to study.

  8. Columbian Classroom Initiative • Spanish Teachers connect with teachers in Columbian schools to develop pen pals for their students. • Classes skype with Columbian classes to talk to their pen pals. • Classes skype with professionals in Columbia to talk about the culture there and how it is similar and different from ours.

  9. Heifer International Project • Students raise money to buy the Principal an animal for his birthday. • Students then study the region of the globe where this animal will most likely be sent and learn about the culture, how this animal will be used, and the impact it will make on the community.

  10. Latin Cultural Performances • As part of our Spanish program, our teachers teach 13 different dances that are native to Central and Latin America and Spain. • The teachers learn the dances, choreograph them, make the costumes, and then supervise the children as they perform.
