  2. PurposeImprove Student Achievement ByIncreasing Family & Community Engagement The purpose of this presentation is to provide a progress report on the implementation of the new Board of Education policy and district initiative to institute a family and community engagement strategy.

  3. District Improvement Plan Part I. Institute a comprehensive family and community engagement strategy. Part II. Engage stakeholders in resource development.

  4. Background 2008-09 • Citizens’ Advisory Council (CAC) • Parent & Community Engagement Committee Established to Explore Resources for Parents & Schools • Two Board of Education Members Worked with the Committee to Develop Policy • CAC Adopted Recommendation • Board Adopted Policy (#8.010)

  5. Background 2008-09 • New Superintendent Joins U-46; Dr. José M. Torres: • Reached Out to Staff, Parents, and the Community • Conducted 90-day “Listening & Learning Plan” and Encouraged Engagement • Identified Family & Community Engagement as a Priority for 2009-10

  6. Work Underway 2009-10 • Pillar V. of District Improvement Plan: Family & Community Engagement • Staff: Chief of Family & Community Engagement and Parent/Community Outreach Coordinator • CAC Committee: Family & Community Engagement

  7. Work Underway • Contributing factors / influences: • Increase in number of Title I schools from 14-31 2. Focus on Response to Intervention (RtI) and PBIS – opportunities for parents 3. Stronger link between District Improvement Plan priorities and principals’ goals 4. Identification of benchmarks and targets
