  1. VELO-UT Cooling Location • Installation of cooling plant in UXA-D4 • PRO: • Space available • Easy Access with overhead Crane • CONs: • No access during LHC operation with beam(!!) • Cost: Need to be equipped with power (EXD, EBD, ESD), network, primary cooling … • Mechanical stability and vibration to be assessed • Alternatives • UXA-C3 + extension: to be studied. • Alcoves PZ85: poor ventilation • D1: After dismantling of the farm

  2. VELO-UT Cooling: installation & commissioning • Installation and commissioning before LS2 • Warning: LHCb will take data. Only urgent corrective maintenance intervention are allowed outside technical stops. Any minor problem could interfere with LHCb and lead to loss of data • Installation • Installing power outlet requires to safely power off the upstream cabinet • Connection pipes, valves, … etc require emptying of the circuit • Commissioning: • electrical shorts or trip can trigger higher level circuit breaker • Water leak can trigger power cut/damage electronic in D4 • Blowing dust, even sweeping in D4 can trigger the fire detection system • Filling, emptying a circuit can trigger main pump interlock • Fast change in flow, temperature, pressure can trigger DSS system • Primary cooling power in D-barracks is already short and needed to PC farm.

  3. VELO-UT Cooling: transfer lines • Installation of transfer lines before LS2 • Dismantling (1/3 of) the shielding wall is a long, heavy and dirty work • No time / Not foreseen/not desirable before LS2 • Passage at the ceiling: to be investigated

  4. Conclusion It is a good idea to anticipate the construction and the commission of the VELO/UT Cooling plants Doing the commissioning in parallel with a running experiment creates a significant risk of loss of data and imply many constraints to the commissioning activities The are several possible location. The cost of the infrastructure should be take into account, as well as access restrictions. It is not realistic to dismantle the shielding wall before LS2. Alternative routes for the transfer should be assessed. Reminder – independently of installation/commissioning plans transport of the cooling plant (or parts) only via the lift or shielding wall door: limited to ~88cm x 2m
