  2. Contents • What is Macro Photography • Where to Start • Challenges

  3. What is Macro Photography • Macro photography is close-up photography of usually very small objects. • Macro photography’ is actually when you produce an image where your subject is captured on your image sensor at life size (or bigger) with a 1:1 ratio • Subjects for macro photography can be found nearly everywhere like Water drops, Flower, Insects, Butterflies, Pens, Pencils or even a Bulb Filament  • Macro photographs can give details that is not possible to see in naked eye and can give completely different perspective of common objects • Biggest Advantage of Macro photography compared to other type of photography is that you get subjects all around you  • Macro photographs normally have shallow depth of field (DOF : The area in front of and behind a focused subject in which the photographed image appears sharp) What makes good (Macro) photograph? Subject in focus, Eye should be in focus Smooth, neat background (also called as Bokeh) Good composition Good post processing (RAW – JPEG processing)

  4. Where to start Point and shoot camera • Capable of taking good macros • Macro mode sets up the camera Macro Mode - -is generally symbolized with a little flower -instructs the built in electronics to perform closer focusing than it normally would -will also usually tell your camera to choose a large aperture so that your subject is in focus but the background is not. Pros : Inexpensive, Compact, Closer focusing distance, Multipurpose, Ideal for casual/occasional shooters. Cons : Small sensor, Not much manual control especially no manual focus, Not much scope for creativity.

  5. Where to start.. contd DSLR Cameras with Non-macro lens • Cheaper alternatives to Macro lens • Macro capability in normal lenses like 18-55mm lens can be enhanced Diopter: Its just an magnifying lens which can be attached to any lens Lens Reversal ring : Its an adapter to reverse mount the lens Extension tubes : It will increase the distance between sensor and lens which will increase magnification Pros : Very cheap, Great to learn MacrosCons : Auto-focus may not work, Quality of image not good, Can shoot only Macros

  6. Where to start.. contd DSLR + Macro lens • For serious Macro photographers • Ability to capture subjects with 1:1 projection (to sensor). • A "macro" lens can focus much closer than a "non-macro" lens • Will give neat Bokeh Pros: Excellent results, Works excellently as portrait lens Cons : Expensive, Not always suited for generic photography

  7. Nice to have • Tripod : More than a useful tool for macro photography • SLRs with Vari-angle live view • Additional light sources like Ring flash, torch • Alternative : Diffuser • Remote release • Focusing rail • Note : Don’t buy DSLR if you are planning to shoot only Auto Mode 

  8. Challenges Click early morning Early morning and evening light gives best result Light Under shade and Morning sunlight

  9. Challenges.. Contd.. Focal Plane Get parallel to the subject to get good DOF, especially for butterflies and flowers Patience Patience pays!! Learn to click, Click to learn

  10. Challenges.. Contd.. Angle of light Result of approx 5-8° change in angle Flexibility and Angles More flexible you are better angle you get, Also be prepared to get dirty 

  11. Challenges.. Contd.. You must have an eye for small creatures and patterns of Nature Capturing is easy when you see the “Right” subject and visualize the appropriate composition Timing Be ready with generic settings.. You may not always get second chance, sometimes even first chance also
