  17. Part 2 Reading Passage A Brief Introduction to Chinese Tourist Cities (1)

  18. China is a time capsule of both ancient culture and modern miracles, where you may find hundreds of postcard opportunities while visiting some of its best scenery and historical sites. Do you want to discover the splendor of China and expose yourself to its great history and extensive culture? Before traveling to this mysterious and exotic country, you should read some background information to enrich your visit. • The People's Republic of China is situated in eastern Asia, bounded by the Pacific in the east. As the third largest country in the world, it covers an area of 9.6 million square kilometers. It begins from the confluence of the Heilong and Wusuli rivers in the east to the Pamirs west of Wuqia County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the west, about 5, 200 kilometers apart;

  19. and from the midstream of the Heilong River north of Mohe in the north to the southernmost island Zengmu ’ansha in the South China Sea, about 5, 500 kilometers apart. It is a united multi-ethnic country being divided into 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities, and 2 special administrative regions directly under the central government. • The name “China” is an English Transliteration of the Chinese Character “秦” (pronounced "chin"), which was the first imperial dynasty of the country being in power between 221 B.C. and 209 B.C. The common name Zhōngguó (中国) is usually translated as "Middle Kingdom." • As one of the four oldest civilizations in the world, China has a written history of over 5, 000 years and boasts rich cultural relics and historical sites. It is also the source of many major inventions, including the so-called “four great inventions of Ancient China”: paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing.

  20. Thirty years of reform and opening up have brought about historic changes in China’s development – a rocketing economy now makes it the fourth largest in the world. Meanwhile, great efforts has being made in promoting tourism. By 2003, more than 1, 000 cities and counties had opened to overseas visitors. In 2006, China became the world's fourth-largest tourist destination after France, Spain and the United States. • Here you can experience the best of two worlds! The economic miracle in Beijing and Shanghai in the East to the sights and sounds of its very own “Wild West” along the old Silk Road. See the contrast in culture and scenery as you move from the Forbidden City in Beijing to Turpan that is heavily influenced by the Middle Eastern cultures. In addition to China’s huge amount of cultural relics and beautiful scenery, what attract overseas visitors most also include the splendour of its anicent art and culture, its traditional multi-national arts and crafts, and food prepared on various local recipes.
