  1. Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of the Community Members, TB Patients and Health Care Providers towards Tuberculosis in Iraq – 2012 NTP Team Presented by Dr LaythSalihi MBChB, FIBMS-CM

  2. Introduction • Tuberculosis still remains as one of the major public health problems in Iraq. WHO Global TB Report (2012), reported a TB incidence rate of 45/100 000 population and a prevalence of TB cases at 74/100,000 population and death rate at 3.2/100,000 population. • In order to provide information for enhancing TB case detection by making the delivery of DOTS more patient-friendly and more attractant, and obtain background information useful in planning for future NTP related ACSM activities, this study aims at studying the knowledge, attitude and practice of physicians, community members and TB patients towards tuberculosis. The study specific objectives are: • Assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of physicians (both NTP and Non-NTP public health facilities), community members and patients towards tuberculosis and its management

  3. Methods • A cross-sectional study was used to implement the KAP survey in fifteen governorates in Iraq over the period 2011-2012 (the three governorates of Kurdistan Region were exclude because already a similar study was conducted earlier). The survey participants were community members, TB patients and physicians. • During one month period, candidates were interviewed by trained study personnel using pretested standardized questionnaire forms. • Proportionate probability sampling technique used to determine the clusters and cluster sizes (for TB patients, community members, and physicians). • Scores were analyzed with SPSS using ANOVA test.

  4. Main Survey Results

  5. Community Members • The number of respondents participated in this survey was 1972. • 35% of participants heard about the National TB Program (NTP) • 73% believe that TB is a recoverable disease • 87% said that TB patients should seek help from primary health care centers or TB clinics • 80% Avoid or try to avoid TB patients

  19. Conclusions & Recommendations • There are evident gaps in all investigated knowledge, attitude, practices and beliefs, and they were profound at community members level. Such findings question the status of public TB care services utilization. • Social stigmata of TB still a considerable obstacle faces public health measures against TB. • There is an urgent need to put a national strategic plan for advocacy, communication and social mobilization to combat these challenges and booster TB control in Iraq. • Under the umbrella of STOP TB Strategy; PPM program have to cover all non-trained physicians (NTP & non-NTP) in training activities.
