  4. The Department of English has always been a pride in the college and has been a centre of attraction. Its reputation is attributed to the contributions made by successive generations of teachers in terms of academic commitment and a will to utilize best values of language studies.

  5. MISSION • To provide students with the opportunity to develop the maximum degree of functional Competence in English language and • to enable them to use the language as a tool for communication, study, pleasure and work. • We put sustained efforts to make learning more integrated, more relevant and more enjoyable.

  6. INTERNAL ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS • The department is equipped with excellent learning facilities including a well-resourced computer aided multi-media language laboratory. • World-class spacious AECS LAB with GD rooms and Interview cabins are coming up. • Students’ learning aptitude is on the whole positive and they are generally cooperative. When they are given chances to learn with fun, they display motivation and creativity. • There is a strong sense of responsibility among colleagues . Their good rapport with students helps establish a relaxed atmosphere for English learning. • Co-curricular and club activities are well-structured with clear focuses and targets to strengthen English learning environment in the college.

  8. WEAKNESSES • Students have inadequate exposure to English in their daily lives. Most of the junior and senior students lack confidence in using English for interaction. • Their pronunciation, communication and collaboration skills are generally weak. • Remedial support for the less able students needs strengthening. • Assessment for learning has to be further facilitated.

  9. OBJECTIVES • To improve the quality of assignments aiming to cultivate students’ creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills. • To promote reading to learn , learning to read • To raise teaching and learning effectiveness, promote systematic learning and thus, improve students’ academic performance.

  10. To infuse the use of language arts and authentic materials into the task-based curriculum ,e.g. on-line-reading programme, news paper clippings and viewing reports. • To keep all the materials, quizzes, exercises, hand-outs etc. for use. • To record students’ common mistakes/errors for revision. • To raise students’ awareness of their pronunciation problems. • To build students’ habit of using dictionary for their learning.

  11. OVERVIEW • The English department this year poured energy into curriculum development, search for creativity and long term planning. They have borne satisfying fruit. • The department of English concluded an academic year which saw a plethora of activities being conducted by the vibrant student team under the able guidance of the supportive faculty members. • From here, it is only a matter of sustained interests and efforts that will see the students to be pioneers of original and creative thought.

  12. The department of English shouldered the responsibility to make The Orientation Program for the year 2011-12 and made it a grand success. • Department sincerely extended its services for the Inauguration of “SPHOORTHY ENGINEERING COLLEGE RECREATION CLUB (SECRE) on 2-1-2012 • Late Mrs. C.G.Vrinda was the Head of Sphoorthy Women’s chapter.

  13. Department coordinated for the success of TIMES TALENT HUNT COMPETETION-FRESH FACE2011 on 6/1/2012. Students showcased their talent and were featured in “The Times Of India.”

  14. The Clean and Clear Hyderabad Times Fresh Face 2011 at Sphoorthy Engineering College (SEC) saw an overwhelming participation from the college.-as quoted by Times Of India.

  16. Department members were also part of the editorial board of Ripples 2K12 which were released on 15-8-2011 & 26-1-2012.

ALSO SHOULDERED… • All the college related activities • Editorial Work • Various departmental programmes • Anchoring activity for Tech Fest-Prajasti-2k12 • Anchoring activity for Annual Day-Samisti-2k12, Republic Day& Independence Day celebrations • Evaluation of competitions conducted by placement cell and other departments

ACADEMICS • Department of English plays a vital role in imparting English language skills to the student s. • Department members actively involved in motivating the students, to develop communication skills. • Notice Board was designed towards imparting communication skills to the students, with reading material from Literature , Language, Perception and Lateral Thinking to develop the same skill sets. • Gathered Reading Comprehension material for AECS Lab and successfully trained students .

  19. A large collection of software preparation guide for GRE,TOEFL,CAT etc. from leading and reputed publishers is available for the students for CAREER ENGLISH. • Communicating in English was made compulsory in English Lab and also in language classes. The students were instructed to follow the same in all other classes to acquire better communication ability. • The communication skill classes were divided semester wise so that the same topics are not repeated-the material for the same was also gathered to enhance classroom delivery.

  20. All the members of the Department trained the students to present their skills by using modern aids confidently. This is the achievement of the 1st B.Tech students. • We trained the 3rd year students for corporate readiness by involving them in Group Discussions, debates, role plays, mock interviews and many more. • As language is a skill which is to be acquired by continuous practice we impart communication skills to 2nd and 4th Year B.Tech students on regular basis.

  21. We impart Business communication and soft skills to the PG i.e. M.B.A. students.  • We constantly strive for the stage readiness of the students of all the streams. • We train the students by laying lot of emphasis on practical knowledge.

  23. TASKS AHEAD • To identify students from Telugu medium and Counsel them to build up their confidence to learn English. • To Encourage & train students for enacting One-Act Plays as part of Shakespeare Dramatic Club. • As the adage goes “A tree is known by its fruit” Spoorthy students should be identified with their English. This our ambition.

  24. REQUEST FOR… • More Reference Books for the Department. • Accession for English Journals . • An English daily to be used as a teaching aid.
