  2. Is It or Isn’t It ADHD? • Christina is a child who does not know when to stop! She is 12 years old. • She wakes up running around like a chicken with its head cut off! • She incessantly talks. She incessantly takes things from the other children in school. • When she comes home she is wiped out and sleeps like a lamb until time to go to bed. • Is it or isn’t it ADHD?

  3. ADHD: DEFINITION • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD is considered to be a neuro -developmental disorder that affects a person’s ability to concentrate on tasks, avoid distractions, to sit still, and think about consequences before they act. ADHD is the most common behavioral disorder in school-aged children. Approximately 3% to 7% of school-aged children have ADHD.

  4. ADHD History 1845: 1st described by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman (poet writer) “Fidgety Philip” Story about a child with special ADHD. 1902: Sir George F. Still, Royal College published a series of lectures on ADHD. Talked about a group of children with significant behavioral issues.

  5. TYPES OF ADHD • Three patterns to watch for: • Predominantly Hyperactive: Can not focus-either on directions or tasks. • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive:Fidgety, restless, impulsive. • Combined Type: Symptoms of the above two types are equally predominant in the person. • One half of people with ADHD have some other mental disorder that makes it harder to diagnose ADHD.

  7. Who Do You See?

  8. MEDICINES USED TO TREAT ADHD

  9. The Diagnosis • ADHD specialist asks the question: • Are these behaviors excessive, long term or pervasive? Meaning, do they occur more often than they do the other kids? • Are they a continuous problem, not just a response to a temporary situation? • Do the behaviors occur in several settings or only one specific place, like the playground or in the classroom? Then time to look it up in the manual, the DSM IV TR.

  10. ADHD IS OR ISN’T IT • ADHD has to appear before the age of 7. • Has to continue for at least 6 months. • Must create a real handicap in at least two areas of a person’s life such as in school, on the playground at home or in the community!

  11. ADHD Tests and Diagnosis • Parent-completed Child Behavior Checklist • Teacher Report Form (TRF) of the Child Behavior Checklist • Conners Parent and Teacher Rating Scales • ADD-H: Comprehensive Teacher Rating Scale (ACTeRS) • Barkley Home Situations Questionnaire (HSQ) • Barkley School Situations Questionnaire (SSQ)
