1. Vitamins For a Healthy Life How Did We Discover Them and What are They? Why does my body need them? The Major-StAIR project is designed for use in the K-8 curriculum. It uses the Deductive and Inductive Instructional Strategies. The learner is given the rule first then the example-Deductive, Inductive- the student is shown examples then figures out the rule. A combination of these two strategies are used. The Michigan Life Management Education (Family and Consumer Sciences) Content Standards and Benchmarks Employed in this presentation is Content Standard 6: All students will develop a plan for individual and family wellness. It specifically addresses E6.6 for elementary students –Explore the Food Pyramid, M6.6 for Middle school students- Demonstrate the ability to make nutritious choices in a food establishment, and H6.6 Apply food pyramid in food decision making and H6.7 Analyze food labeling. The importance of understanding the role of vitamins in food choices is a building block to all of these curriculum standards. The Presentation allows for feedback to the student in a timely basis and meets the objective of teaching the student what the13 vitamins are, where they are derived from, why the body needs them, and what they each do for the body specifically. 4. Vitamins-Where does my body get them from? There are 13 vitamins and each one does something important for your body to stay healthy You get them from the foods you eat, vitamin pills, or from enriched foods or dietary supplements

8. Diseases-You can get SCURVY from not enough Vitamin C The cause of a disease called Scurvy was a mystery Scientists searched for it in polluted water, rotted foods, in poisons, and they even looked for a survey germ. The search had come to a dead end UNTIL…….

9. How did we Discover Vitamin Deficiency Diseases? It was discovered that Sailors suffered from a disease called SCURVY- gums bleed, teeth fall out, your skin bruises easily, and you can die from it In 1740, Dr James Lind a Scottish ship’s doctor found that sailors who ate citrus fruits were cured of their scurvy. If there is no Vitamin C in your diet you could get Scurvy.

The Scientific Discovery of Vitamins A and B In 1913 scientists discovered chemical substances they called vitamins The first ones were called Vitamin A and Vitamin B In 1928 a white powder was extracted from oranges and cabbages. It was discovered this powder cured scurvy. It is was named ascorbic acid. It come from the Greek word meaning ”no scurvy” Now we call ascorbic acid Vitamin C

The Beriberi Disease In the Orient far away another mysterious disease affected thousands of people It’s cause was unknown A Japanese Scientist found that when the Oriental people added meat and vegetables to their diet of white rice the beriberi went away. The B Vitamins found in these foods cured them..

19. More Diseases people can get from not getting their RDA of vitamins RDA –is the recommended daily allowance by the US Dept of Agriculture Rickets-the main symptom is softening of the bones. Pellagra-The main symptoms are itching, red skin, and general weakness.
