FIRST AID WORKSHEET

  • 1. Your patient has injured her shoulder and is in a lot of pain. Explain which procedure you would use to immobilize this injury and list the steps you would follow to do it correctly.

    • The procedure is the sling and swathe.

    • The steps are as follows:

      • Check CSM (Circulation, sensory, and motor)

      • Tie a knot in the short corner of a triangular bandage to create the sling.

      • Place the knot behind the elbow threading one corner under the elbow and up the chest and behind the neck to the far side of the neck while the other corner is placed directly up the chest to the other corner and is tied on the far side of the neck.

      • A second triangular is made into a 2 inch strap (this is the swathe). Place the swathe around the outside of the injured arm and around the body, tying it under the far arm.

      • Check CSM a second time.

First aid worksheet

2. You enter a room and find a man lying onthe floor and he seems to be unconscious. List, in order, the steps you would follow in dealing with this patient.

First aid worksheet

  • Attempt to awaken the patient.

  • Call for help. (call 911 and get an AED)

  • Check for a pulse on the carotid artery and look for breathing.

  • If there is no pulse, begin CPR with 30 chest compressions.

  • Then give two breaths.

  • One should do 5 cycles of 30 compressions and two breaths.

  • * If you find a pulse and the patient is not breathing-call for help and begin rescue breathing with two breaths followed by another breath every 5-6 seconds.

First aid worksheet

3. You are babysitting an infant. The infant has been eating Kix cereal and suddenly begins to turn blue. What would you suspect is going on and what would you do?

First aid worksheet

  • I would suspect that the infant is choking.

  • Cradle the baby’s face in your hand making sure to spread your fingers to allow the object to leave the mouth.

  • Turn the infant so it’s stomach rests on your forearm and your forearm rests on your thigh with the head lower than the baby’s heart. Give 5 back blows.

  • Turn the baby face up and on your arm and leg as before. Give 5 chest thrusts

  • Repeat until the object comes out or the baby becomes unconscious.

First aid worksheet

4. In question 3, the infant loses consciousness. Explain how this would change your procedure.

First aid worksheet

  • Call for help. (Activate EMS)

  • Give 30 chest compressions for an infant.

  • Look in the mouth for a loose object. Pick it out if you see it.

  • Attempt to give two breaths.

  • Repeat 30 compressions, look for the object, and attempt ventilations.

First aid worksheet

5. You are hiking with a friend and he falls, dislocating his knee. Describe how you would splint the knee so that it would be safe to move him.

First aid worksheet

  • Check CSM at the ankle or top of the foot.

  • Create 3 ties from clothing, etc.

  • Find 2 sticks and pad them if you can.

  • Place one of the ties around the knee.

  • Have your friend or another person hold the sticks on each side of the knee.

  • Tie the sticks together with one tie against the shin and the upper tie against the thigh. Tie each just tight enough to keep the sticks in place.

  • Tie the tie at the knee just around the sticks under the knee. Tighten until the sticks are snug against the leg. Double knot the tie.

  • Tighten the upper tie until snug and double knot this tie.

  • Tighten the lower tie until snug and double knot this tie.

  • Check CSM again.

  • Friend can safely be moved.

First aid worksheet

6. You are at a swimming pool and someone yells for help. They tell you that the child lying on the decking was under water for about a minute. The child is cyanotic (turning blue). Give a detailed, step by step, description of what you would do.

First aid worksheet

  • Attempt to awaken the child.

  • Tell a specific person to activate the EMS system.

  • Check for a pulse and breathing.

  • If there is no pulse, begin 30 chest compressions. If there is a pulse open the airway and give two breaths followed by one breath every 5-6 seconds. Monitor the pulse between breaths.

  • If there was no pulse the two breaths would be given now (we gave the 30 compressions already). 5 cycles of 30 compressions, using one hand, and 2 breaths would be given. Then reassess the child for pulse and breathing to know if you need to continue CPR.

First aid worksheet

7. Your partner has cut her arm about 3 inches above the wrist and she is bleeding severely. What first aid steps would you follow? (in order please)

First aid worksheet

  • Place a clean cloth on the wound and apply direct pressure to the wound.

  • Elevate the wound above the partner’s heart

  • Find the brachial artery in the upper arm and apply pressure to that pressure point.
