University Center Fosters Entrepreneurship at UF • Match researchers with potential management • Assist in business plan creation and market feasibility studies • Provide training for “wanna be” entrepreneurs • Entrepreneurship for Scientists & Engineers • Offer support to existing faculty entrepreneurs • Entrepreneur Roundtables • Introduce funding opportunities through VC and angel network introductions • Monthly visits from VC groups

Applied GeneticsTechnology Corporation(AGTC) • This UF start-up develops gene therapies for diseases such as Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, which causes early-onset emphysema • UF/EDA-UC helped to introduce AGTC to potential investors • AGTC recently raised more than $15 million from investors to begin clinical trials – bringing this life-altering therapy one big step closer to market • Reside at the BDI • The company’s gene therapies also restored sight to Lancelot, a dog blind since birth

BioProdex, Inc. • Bioprodex’ solution offers an environmentally safe alternative to the current practice of chemically combating the highly invasive Tropical Soda Apple (TSA), which poses a serious threat to Florida’s cattle and agricultural industries • UF/EDA University Center helped connect this start-up with a seasoned CEO to develop a business plan • Has received Phase I of the federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant and is currently applying for Phase II

EnviroFlux, LLC • UF start-up created through UF’s Integrated Technology Ventures (ITV) Program: engineering students designed a prototype meter to measure flux (contaminants in ground water), and business students wrote a business plan • UF/EDA-UC provided an experienced CEO to oversee project • The CEO and a business student have recently signed a term sheet • June 1, 2005: EnviroFlux moving into GTEC

Impact of UF Tech-BasedStart-up Companies, 2003 • Direct impact: sales, jobs and income generated by the companies • Indirect impact: economic activity generated by businesses selling goods and services because of the presence of the UF-connected companies • Induced impact: economic activity generated from spending by employees of those companies

Summary University of Florida/EDA University Center: • Brings the pieces of the puzzle together to create companies • Organizes and sponsors numerous workshops to foster entrepreneurship • Serves as a magnet for entrepreneurs and investors seeking new opportunities, and a catalyst for new business creation
