  3. Why learn about eating disorders? • Eating disorders are prevalent among our entire society today. • Eating disorders can manifest in many different ways among many different people. • Common among adolescents struggling with self esteem and body image issues • Schools should be knowledgeable of this deadly disease and be a source of support and referral for our young students.

  4. Type of Research • Internet used to find sources • Most sites were professional or commercial • No government or school sites found in research thus far

  7. Site Category Scores • A breakdown of the site category scores can be seen in this chart below.

  8. Research organized Internet Research has been organized into an Internet Address Book.

  9. Audience Types • Counselors, Student, Teachers or Administration. • Most of the websites seemed to be directed to the student (the one suffering from the disease) • Almost all sites had information or links that would be beneficial to someone (school or family) researching in order to help the one suffering

  10. Recommended sites The Remuda Ranch • Offers links for a wide variety of audiences. • There is a “professional” link that is updated regularly to offer information on different educational events and opportunities

  11. Recommended SitesContinued • Something-Fishy • Offers an incredible amount of information • A person could obtain an extensive understanding of eating disorders, many different places to refer a person, to signs and causes

  12. Virtual Tour Click here for a virtual tour of the site Something-Fishy and learn about the beneficial aspects of the site.

  13. Recommended SitesContinued • F.E.A.S.T. • Empowered and Supporting Treatment of Eating Disorders • This website offers information geared towards the families of individuals who are suffering • Offers information regarding eating disorders, links to find different media sources, conferences and events, different approaches in treating the disease among other types of resources

  14. Recommended SitesContinued • Rader Programs offers an extensive amount of information that can be very beneficial for an individual suffering from the disease. • There are sections that go into great detail covering the problems, the solutions, significant others, and other issues. • These categories offer an incredible scope of information. Whether you’re a counselor, a student, or a family member, the site will surely be beneficial to your research

  15. Recommended SitesContinued • There is a referral website for eating disorders that acts as a referral to necessary doctors, therapists, etc. for those who are suffering. • This website offers information on the different eating disorders, medical advice (with a disclaimer that it should not replace a doctor’s expertise), as well as information on eating disorders among males. • Although this site offers sufficient information for individuals who are suffering, it seems to be most geared for those who are affected by someone who is suffering. • The site is a good source to seek professional help.

  16. Recommended SitesContinued • The International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals is a website that is its name. • It has great information and links to information but is geared more to the professional who is working with the disorder. • This website would be perfect for administration and counselors who are seeking new curriculum for their staff.

  17. Recommended SitesContinued • Joanna Poppink, MTF, is a psychotherapist that specializes in treating individuals who suffer from eating disorders and those who know someone who is suffering. • This site seems beneficial because it is much more personalized than other sites. Joanna creates an atmosphere within her site that is safe and informative.

  18. Recommended SitesContinued • ANAD is an organization that was developed in 1976 by a mom of a daughter who suffered from anorexia nervosa. • She developed this organization due to the lack of sources and support with eating disorders in the 70’s. • This organization is the oldest in the nation • It offers information, resources, and hotlines for those who are suffering and those who are affected by one who is suffering. • Due to this organization being developed by a mother, it has a more personal genuine atmosphere than some of the other professional sites.

  19. Recommended SitesContinued • Caring Online is a site that has a smaller scope of information but is a good site for those suffering from the disease. • An excellent aspect of this site is the discussion/blog section. • This offers great support for those suffering to reach out to others for advice or support and keep their anonymity if they please. • This is most likely also beneficial for individuals seeking help for someone they know who is suffering.

  20. Recommended SitesContinued • Freedom from Eating Disorders is a site that seems to focus on the recovery and the spirit of the individual suffering and those around them. • It focuses on expressive therapy with poems, lyrics to songs, etc. • The site offers nice resources for those who are recovering including personal stories. • There is also a section of the website dedicated to friends and family and how they can help in the recovery process.

  21. Internet Excerpts • I developed an Internet Excerptfile for review on all sites that I have researched thus far • This will assist in the navigation of all the sites I reviewed • You can also review a narrative of what I have researched here.

  22. For more Information I will continue my research on this topic. With more research and training, I think that is very possible for schools to become more involved and possibly be a part of prevention for our students. As I continue my research, I will be regularly updating my website. Please feel free to continue checking it for its updates.
