  1. Action of catalase To investigate the effect of particle size on reaction time To look at a physiological difference between animals and plants To interpret results

  2. Catalase background Hydrogen peroxide H2O2 is produced by respiration and is highly damaging to cell tissue as it is an oxidising agent It is rapidly removed in the body through the breakdown to water and oxygen This breakdown is catalysed by an enzyme catalse Each team (4) does the same investigation Class results collected to give 4 replicates

  3. Practical To investigate the effect of particle size on reaction rate; To make some comparative observations of animal and plant tissue

  4. Method Cut 5 x 4 cm3 cubes of potato; Cut 5 x 4cm³ cubes of liver; Cut 1 cube in half, 1 into quarters, one into eighths and one into sixteenths – leaving the last one whole Add each cube (ready chopped) in turn to a fresh tube containing 5cm³ of Hydrogen peroxide Time it until it stops bubbling Record this time

  5. Analysis Collect data in a table; Draw graph of number of pieces vs time to complete reaction for potato and liver Discuss what these graphs show you about particle size and reaction time – explain why using particle science; Explain differences between liver and potato. What link do you think it has with relative rates of respiration?
