  1. INTRODUCTIONS Creating an Introduction is the most important part of an essay!

  2. Introductions • First impressions are so important. How many times have you heard that? It is true that the first impression—whether it’s a first meeting with a person or the first sentence of a paper—sets the stage for a lasting opinion.

  3. Introductions • The introductory paragraph of any paper, long or short, should start with a sentence that piques the interest of your readers. • Then the last sentence in your introduction should be your THESIS!

  4. Creative Hook • A CREATIVE HOOK draws the reader in to find out how the interesting fact leads to a point. You can use many methods to capture your reader’s interest.

  5. Surprising Fact • Surprising fact: The Pentagon has twice as many bathrooms as are necessary.

  6. Quotation • Quotation: Hillary Rodham Clinton once said that “There cannot be true democracy unless women's voices are heard.”

  7. Definition • Definition:A homograph is a word with two or more pronunciations. Produce is one example.

  8. Rhetorical Question • A rhetorical question is a question that your reader may already know the answer to. It gives the reader something to think about and it grabs their attention. • Rhetorical question: Oh, why me? • Isn’t school so boring?

  9. Let’s try it out…. • Writing Prompt: We all have a favorite subject to learn about. Think about one subject that is your favorite to learn about in school. Write to explain why that subject is your favorite.

  11. Introduction Using a Surprising Fact There are millions of pieces of literature in America. Everything from Langston Hughes to William Shakespeare. This is why I love language arts. It gives you an opportunity to explore the different types of literature throughout the English language among other things. For me, no other subject compares. Language Arts is my favorite subject because I love reading literature, I have a great teacher, and I learn how to improve my writing.

  12. Introduction using a Rhetorical Question Is language arts interesting? Well, of course it is. I don’t know what I would do without my language arts class. Throughout the years, I have learned so much about writing and literature. For me, no other subject compares. Language Arts is my favorite subject because I love reading literature, I have a great teacher, and I learn how to improve my writing.
