  2. What is politeness? 1.What is politeness? • Politeness is a universal in human society • phenomenal :a social phenomenon • instrumental :a means to achieve good interpersonal relationships • normative:a norm imposed by social conventions

  3. Politeness and culture values • culture-specific: Different culture has different connotations 内涵 about politeness. • Culture: the entire way of life of a society, the ways of a people.

  4. Material culture is concrete, tangible and substantial, including cities, houses, organizations, etc. spiritual culture is abstract, intangible and indiscernible, including values, beliefs and customs.

  5. Politeness • Western: strategy • Chinese: virtue the means employed to show awareness of another person’s face ,enhance rapport and harmony: show respect to others

  7. 2. “Face” • China:care for others’ faces People in China are encouraged to avoid acts that stir up jealousy, affront authority or incur ill-will things that can damage face

  8. Responding to an invitation Chinese: unambiguous A:明天来吃晚饭啊. B:不来了,太麻烦你了. A:麻烦什么呀?菜都是现成的. B:那也得烧哇. A:你不来我们也得吃饭.一定来啊,不来我可生气啦. B:好吧,就随便一点. Westerners: “Yes , I will.” /“No , thank you.”
