  3. Calories • Your body needs energy to move • Energy in food is measured in Calories • Calories vary depending on the nutrients in it.

  4. 6 Kinds of Nutrients • Proteins • Helps grow, repair and replace body cells • Made up of amino acids (20 different) • 8 essential amino acids must come from food • Found in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, & nuts

  5. 6 Kinds of Nutrients…continued 2. Carbohydrates • Main source of energy • Simple carbohydrates – sugar, honey • Complex carbohydrates – starch (potatoes, pasta), fiber (whole-grains, fruits, vegetables)

Fats • Provide energy & helps body absorb vitamins • Cushions internal organs • Excess energy is stored as fat • Unsaturated fat – liquid at room temperature • Saturated fat – solid at room temperature • Diets high in saturated fat are linked to high cholesterol

  7. 6 Kinds of Nutrients…continued 4. Vitamins • Organic , regulating nutrients needed for growth, regulating body functions, and preventing some disease • Water soluble – dissolves in water (B, C) • Fat soluble – dissolved only in fat (A,E,K,D)

  8. 6 Kinds of Nutrients…continued 5. Minerals • Inorganic nutrients that regulate chemical reactions in the body • Build cells, take part in chemical reactions in cells, send nerve impulses throughout the body, and carry oxygen to cells (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, iron)

  9. 6 Kinds of Nutrients…continued 6. Water • Need water to survive • Cells need water to function • Nutrients cannot be used unless it is carried in a solution • Your body is about 60% water • Need to drink about 2 liters a day
