What are the elements that shape a short story? • Plot- sequence of events that ties the beginning of a story to its end • Conflict- the struggle between two or more forces that must be resolved by the end of the narrative • Setting- a story’s time and place (location, weather, time of year) • Characters- people, animals, other individuals in the story • Characterization- describing the character’s physical

Theme- the main idea, or message, in a literary work • Not the subject of a story, but an insight about life or human nature • Stated theme- expressed directly • Implied theme- the author reveals through setting, point of view, and the actions of the characters

Voice- the distinctive use of language that conveys the author’s or narrator’s personality to the reader • Determined by word choice or tone or mood • (tone = the author’s attitude toward subject matter or audience

  5. Let’s look at how they function in a short story We are going to read “The Jump” by Leo Tolstoy while applying our knowledge of literary elements. Turn to page 4 in your textbooks and let’s read together.

Now, let’s apply all 9 of these elements to “The Most Dangerous Game” • On a sheet of paper, give me an explanation or example for each of the elements listed below • Plot (Draw diagram and label using points from the story) • Conflict (Give two examples- category and subcategory?) • Setting (Give time and place) • Characters (list all four) • Characterization (give physical appearance example using actions) • Theme (what’s the main idea, or message?) • Narrator • Point of View (how do you know that?) • Voice (what’s the attitude toward the story?)
