  1. CATCH COORDINATED APPROACH TO CHILD HEALTH APRIL 25, 2013

  2. Rick Sanders SIU-C 1983 Physical Education Athletic Training SSU 1994 Educational Administration Leadership SPS 1984-present Teacher, coach, AD, AP, Principal, Coordinator of Athletics, PE & Health

  3. CATCH 2010-present In 2010 SPS was awarded a $150,000 grant from IDPH to implement CATCH at all 24 elementary schools. The money provided supplies, equipment, training, consultation, family health fairs, student health fairs and gardens.

  4. A SUCCESSFUL CATCH PROGRAM • Must have a CHAMPION • This person is usually the facilitator for the entity/organization and MUST keep the mission of CATCH in the minds of the stakeholders (staff, students, parents, community)

  5. Must Have A CATCH/WELLNESS COMMITTEE • 4-5 staff members that are passionate about WELLNESS • Nurse, PE teacher, Café manager, teacher(s) • Must meet AT LEAST 1 time per month • 2x is ideal • Establish a calendar of events for the year

  6. Review Current Policies Surrounding Nutrition and Fitness Activities • Recess Before Lunch • Birthday Parties • Recess • Brain Breaks • Motivation/Incentives for Mileage Clubs • After School Activities For Students • Wellness Curriculum • Use/Access to Fitness Space • Wellness for Adults • Cooking Demonstrations • Fitness Activities Before/After School • Girls on the Run

  7. REVIEW, REFLECT, RESPOND • Am Doing • Can Do • Will Do

  8. Must Have Administrative Support • District support is great, but it is not essential. • The Principal/Assistant Principal MUST be involved or provide observable supportive 100% of the time. • The CATCH facilitator needs to have a great deal of autonomy to schedule programs, events, and implement initiatives.

  9. Must Have Contacts for Resources and Sponsors • Having a person responsible to work with community members and businesses is great. This person does not have to be on the CATCH team, but it is helpful.

  10. Must Adopt a Simple Mission Statement • Organizations must keep health, wellness, nutrition, fitness as a supplement to all activities in the building. • Integrate CATCH in the daily curriculum of every class. • Acknowledge “Whoa, Slow and Go” foods in the cafeteria and in the classroom • Educate all stakeholders to make healthy choices.
