What is SNS? • Programme to improve small area statistics • 2001 Onwards • Data supports a number of the SE’s commitments • Those with small area emphasis – Closing the Opportunity Gap – Area deprivation: SIMD • Access to Central Government information will improve policy development at a local level Office of the Chief Statistician

  4. Background • Different geographies • 1991, 1996, 1999 Wards; Postcode Sectors… • Different dissemination • Just not there • Geographic referencing • Confidentiality: issues and perceptions • Guidelines and overlapping geographies Office of the Chief Statistician

  5. What data has SNS delivered? • New stable small area geography: data zone • 6505 data zones; • 750 people; • COAs and LAs • Consulting on intermediate geography with Community Planning Partnerships Office of the Chief Statistician

  6. What data has SNS delivered? • Making the most of administrative data …but surveys also playing a role • Involves statisticians from across the SE and UK departments • Changing the way we collect data …unit records rather than aggregate returns Office of the Chief Statistician

What data has SNS delivered? • Geo referenced data sets • Education – ScotXed • Community Care - LAs • Existing geo-referenced data now available on data zone • Health - ISD • Housing – Scottish Assessors • Births/deaths - GROS • Some Benefits and Labour Market – DWP & ONS Office of the Chief Statistician

What data development are we working on? • Still work to do to plug gaps: • Data zone populations and households - GROS • Housing tenure, type, etc… - Communities Scotland • Benefits and Labour market – DWP & ONS/SE … • Crime… Social Capital… Financial Resources… …Physical Environment Office of the Chief Statistician

  9. What are the future plans? • SNS is not one off short term project • On-going funding • Information regularly updated • Four updates a year • Views from users always welcome Office of the Chief Statistician
