  1. WINDOWS 8 & INTERNET EXPLORER 10A First Look

  2. UPGRADE PROCESS • First download & run Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor from www.microsoft.com • Time required [on a club computer] about 75 minutes • You may be asked to uninstall certain non-compatible programs. You must do this to continue to install. • You will be asked what you want to bring forward. Choose the option that is “everything”

  3. THE “START” SCREEN

  4. THE “START” SCREEN • You should see the standard “Tiles” on the left side • To the right you should see Tiles for the programs that you would have seen at the top left if you had clicked START in earlier Windows versions

  5. TILES • Tiles is the term used rather than “Icons” • Tiles can be rearranged on the screen using “drag & drop” • Tiles can be manipulated by right clicking on the desired tile • What can be done depends on the nature of the tile • LET’S TAKE A LOOK

  6. TILE MANIPULATION CHOICES

  7. ALL APPS • “All Apps” appears to be the equivalent of “All Programs” from the “Start” menu in previous versions • “Apps” are grouped – may have to look closely to see where a given item is to be found • Tiles can be manipulated with right click as before

  8. THE DESKTOP The Desktop as we currently know it is – MOSTLY – still available It can be accessed either from a Tile in Start or by right clicking the Tile accessed by “hovering” in the bottom left hand corner of the screen It works in the same way as before

  9. THE DESKTOP

  10. ONE DIFFERENCE Windows Explorer is now File Explorer – which is a better name for it

  11. THE “CHARMS” Charms are a new feature the Icons for which can be displayed by “hovering” in the top or bottom right of the screen

  12. SETTINGS The Power setting is where you go to shut down The Tiles setting is useful to see many “Utility Tools”

  13. UTILITY TOOLS

  14. WHERE IS IT? • Some things you may want such as “Control Panel” are not immediately available unless you have “All Apps” showing • This means a lot of scrolling and looking carefully to find what you want • You can use the “Search Charm” – just type in the search box the name • There is a clever way!

  15. FIND IT QUICK! Click on any plain blue area of “Start” and type what you want You will see matching suggestions

  16. INTERNET EXPLORER 10 • When you install Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10 is installed automatically. • You can NOT go back to an earlier version of IE after the install – IE10 must be used! • Launching Internet Explorer from “Start” loads the “Metro” version of the Browser – Metro being the terminology for the general graphic interface of Windows 8 • It looks like this…………………………

  17. INTERNET EXPLORER 10 The Metro version of IE is a little more difficult to work with as it has less facilities being geared to smaller screens like smart phones or tablets However, IE can also be launched from the Desktop – and will be more familiar!!!!

  18. SHOULD I DO IT? • If you want/need to get a new computer, there is an adjustment period but should be short • If it is a matter of upgrading, at this time we can see no major advantage. It is somewhat clumsy if Mouse only or Touchpad that does not support “multi-gesture” use • BUT

  19. WE GOT RUMOURS! • Windows 9 [Windows Blue?] to be released as early as this summer • IF TRUE – could be a separate release or a service pack upgrade to W8 • Suggestions that this could mean anything from no charge to a small charge to “regular” new version price • CONCLUSION: Waiting a few months is, for most of us, not going to hurt
