  11. Bricklaying Diploma Students – Employer Expectation Findings - Instead of expected 3-6 month induction/settling in period on site it is closer to 6 -18 months due to: • A lack of understanding by students of up to date site practices • Little site experience or understanding of the requirements of working on a productive site • A lack of engagement with day to day working patterns • Lack of some of the most basic skills such as working to line and level • Training environment - lack of context, scale and unrealistic settings/surroundings • Students lack confidence to apply themselves which leads to employers not having the confidence to allow them • Lack of continuous/sustained practical work so students understand the physical requirements of work on site.

  12. To think about……………. • How we can improve the number of FE students entering the trade they trained for? • Sharing Skills Frameworks with all Construction Departments • Regional interventions for FE trainers – how/who/where? • CITB brickwork Academies / curriculum • More intensive practical training i.e. longer periods on the trowel over a sustained period. • Providing more realistic site like conditions or more site visits. • Concentrating on key basic skills such as laying to a line to build confidence and make them more productive on site. • Incorporating modern ways of working especially around key areas such as fire stopping, cavity trays, and working to timber frames. • How employers can practically help.

  13. Home Building Ambassadors • Over 70 Homebuilding Ambassadors available to go into Colleges to: • promote the Home Building industry as a career choice • share their experiences • explain the diverse roles and pathways into the sector • A dedicated websitewww.Housebuildingcareers.org.ukwhere students can find out about homebuilding more generally, what is included in a typical job role as well as earning potential and which Home Builders are in their region with current opportunities.
