  2. Claim • The position being argued for; the conclusion of the argument • What are you trying to prove?

  3. Evidence • The facts and data that support your claim • Usually found by reading, observation, or other research

  4. Reasoning • The rules, logic, principles, or chains of thought that connect your evidence to your claim • The “so what?” for your evidence

  5. Qualification • You can’t prove any claim 100%, so you need to attach phrases to your argument that make it clear you are reasonable. • Words like usually, sometimes, etc.

  6. Counterargument • What the opposite side would have to say about your points • You should understand both sides of an argument

  7. Rebuttal • Your response to the opposing side’s counter-argument • Why you are still right
