History In 2007, CMS developed Star Ratings for MA (Part C) and Part D to help beneficiaries choose among competing plans MA plans awarded between 1 and 5 stars Ratings at the contract level Star ratings posted on Medicare.gov site Improves CMS’ ability to identify high and low performing plans Expands information available to beneficiaries for selecting high quality Health & Prescription Drug Plans

    3. Significance of STAR Ratings March 2010- Congress mandated that CMS use its Star Ratings to reward higher rated plans with quality bonus payments Starting in 2012, plans with 4 or more stars will receive bonuses and higher rebates 4 or more stars: bonuses of 1.5% in 2012, 3.0% in 2013, and 5.0% in 2014 and later years

    4. Significance of STAR Ratings Plans with fewer than 3 stars for at least 3 years will be flagged as “consistently low performer” on Medicare.gov website
