  1. Chapter 9Plate Tectonics 9-1 Continental Drift 9-2 Sea-Floor Spreading 9-3 Theory of Plate Tectonics 9-4 Mechanisms of Plate Motion

  2. Continental Drift Hypothesis • Proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1915 • The continents were once joined to form a single landmass called Pangaea. • About 200 million years ago, Pangaea began to break up. The continents drifted to their present locations.

  3. Evidence • Fit of the Continents… like puzzle pieces • Types of Fossils • Types of Rock • Ancient Climates

  4. Plate Tectonics Puzzle • Cut out the 7 landmasses. They don’t need to be perfect. Make sure you include the shaded areas. • Use the evidence on each landmass to fit them together to make one large landmass (Pangaea). • Raise your had once you think you have it… before you glue it. • Glue the pieces on the paper after it has been checked.

  5. Plate Tectonics Puzzle • This is what your finished puzzle should look like. • Make sure you turn it in with your name(s) on it.

  6. Plate Tectonics Puzzle • 250 million years ago: Supercontinent Pangaea • 200 million years ago: A rift forms between N. America and Africa. This will become the Atlantic Ocean. • 100 million years ago: Rifting continues between major land masses and India moves north. • 50 million years ago: Australia and Antarctica separate. • Now: 6 main landmasses & India collides with Asia

  7. Plate Tectonics Puzzle • Animation… Pangaea would be during the Permian • http://www.wiley.com/college/strahler/0471480533/animations/ch13_animations/animation3.html • Animation with Plates • http://www.eduplace.com/kids/socsci/ca/books/bkf3/imaps/AC_01_005_drift/AC_01_005_drift.html

  8. Major Plates • The lithosphere is broken into large pieces called plates. • 7 Major Plates • North American • South American • African • Antarctic • Eurasian • Australian-Indian • Pacific

  9. Fossil Evidence • Several types of fossil organisms have been found on different landmasses. • The landmasses are now separated by oceans so how could the organisms gotten from one continent to the other?

  10. Fossil Evidence… Specific Fossils • Mesosaurus • Lived in fresh water lakes and shallow bays

  11. Fossil Evidence… Specific Fossils • Glossopteris • Fern species of plant

  12. Fossil Evidence… Specific Fossils • Lystrosaurus • Mammal, about the size of a pig

  13. Rock Types • Mountain belts formed from the same type and age of rock are spread over different continents without crossing the ocean.

  14. Ancient Climates • Global climate changes can be mapped across continents. • These climates do not fit with the climates of today. • For example… There is evidence of glaciers across southern Africa, S. America and Australia.

  15. Continental Drift Hypothesis Rejected • Wegener could not provide a mechanism, or a way, for the plates to move. • His hypothesis was rejected until the 1960s.
