  1. UNL College of EngineeringCommunity and Visionto the 22nd Century

  2. T/TT faculty needs to grow to 200+; recurring 10+ replacement hires/year plus 10 new lines/year for 5 years across all ranks. Average start-up package of $500K per TT hire. Concurrent annual resource pools (~$1M each) for cost share, laboratory fit-up/renewal. Maintain low undergraduate to T/TT faculty ratio (~17 : 1); enrollment growth must be mirrored by faculty growth. One internally funded graduate student (TAs) per T/TT faculty. Concomitant growth in staff. CoE Financials: Underlying Assumptions

  3. Growing the College of Engineering AY2012 AY2014 AY2017+ T/TT Faculty ~160 170 200 Replacement hires ~10 ~13 New hires 10 10 Cumulative hires ~30 ~100 Undergraduates 2700 2900 3400 UG : T/TT Faculty 17 : 1 19 : 1 17 : 1 FTE Graduate Students 360 570 1000 Grad : T/TT Faculty >2 : 1 >3 : 1 5 : 1 Total Student : Faculty >19 : 1 >22 : 1 22 : 1 Research Expenditures $32M $42M $80M Research / Faculty $200K $247K $400K

  4. “Spend money responsibly (and I know you will).” “I don’t want you to be immobilized. Do what you need to do to build a great College of Engineering.” Chancellor’s Concluding Remarks

  5. Between the Big Ten and the growth plan, we have embarked on a path where we will be a fundamentally different college in ~5 years. The challenge/opportunity is to define and shape the College to what it needs to become. “Stanford University now has its first presence in New York City through a joint technology and entrepreneurship venture with City University of New York” ASEE First Bell 13 Oct. 2011 Whether and how we rise to this moment will define our legacy in the College of Engineering. A watershed moment for the CoE:

  6. TEACHING – EMPHASIS ON INTENTIONAL EXCELLENCE (CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT): Comprehensive curricula built on solid fundamentals focused on leadership development. Thoughtfully scaling curricular excellence to capacity. Recruitment, retention and graduation. RESEARCH – EMPHASIS ON FUNDABLE ARCHIVAL SCHOLARSHIP: Four (4) competitively externally funded graduate students (Ph.D.) per T/TT faculty. $400K research expenditures per T/TT faculty (average and median). ORGANIZATION – MAKING SERVICE FOCUSED PRO-FESSIONALISM PERVASIVE IN EVERYTHING WE DO. The Expectations are High

  7. Faculty and staff hiring. Correlating teaching to research productivity. Undergraduate enrollment increases will lead faculty hiring. Comprehensive assessment/revision/reorganization: staff (student services, financial, administrative, technical) undergraduate curricula graduate programs Faculty and staff hiring will be tied to assessment and revision/reorganization exercises engaging faculty and staff as appropriate. First (Next) Steps • Faculty and staff hiring. • Correlating teaching to research productivity. • Undergraduate enrollment increases will lead faculty hiring. • Comprehensive assessment/revision/reorganization: • staff (student services, financial, administrative, technical) • undergraduate curricula • graduate programs • Faculty and staff hiring will be tied to assessment and revision/reorganization exercises engaging faculty and staff as appropriate.
