  5. 일반 11. 위치 (Positions) • 11.1 위도와 경도를 사용할 땐 도(degree)와 분(minutes)을 이용(필요시분단위 소수점 이용)적도를 기준으로 북위/남위, 그리니치를 기준으로 동경/서경 • 11.2 해도에 나타난 물표로부터 상대위치를 나타낼 때는 물표로부터(FROM) 진북을 기준으로 360도법으로 표시 • “Your position bearing 137 degrees from Big Head lighthouse distance 2.4 nautical miles.”

  6. 일반 12. 방위 (Bearings) • 물표나 선박의 방위는 진북(True north)으로부터 360도법으로 표기 • “Pilot boat is bearing 215 degrees from you.” • 12.1 상대방위는 선박의 선수로부터의 상대적인 각도로 표기 • “Buoy 030 degrees on your port bow.”

  7. 일반 13. 침로 (Courses) • 침로는 북(진북, True north)으로부터 360도 단위로 표기 • 침로를 표기할 때는 TO나 FROM를 사용할 수 있다.(물표가 있는 경우)

  8. 일반 14. 거리 (Distances) • 거리는 해리(nautical miles) 또는 케이블(cables, 1/10해리) 단위로 표기

  9. 일반 15. 속도 (Speed) • 속도는 knots로 표기 • 15.1 따로 언급이 없는 경우, 속도는 대수속력(speed through the water)이다. • 15.2 “ground speed”는 땅에 대한 속력(대지속력)이다.

  10. 일반 16. 시간 (Times) • 시간은 24시간 UTC(Universal time coordinate)로 표기 • 지방시(local time)이 사용될 경우, 분명히 표기

  11. 일반 17. 지명 (Geographical names) • 지명은 해도(Chart)나 수로지(Sailing directions)에 따라 표기 • 이해하기 어려운 경우, 위도/경도를 제공

  12. 일반 18. 애매한 단어 (Ambiguous words) • 몇몇 영어 단어는 문맥에 따라 의미가 정해진다. • 이에 오해가 자주 일어나기에, 특히 VTS 통신에서는 사고가 있을 수 있다. • 18.1 “may”, “might”, “should” , “could” • May • Do not say: “May I enter the fairway?” • Say: “QUESTION. Do I have permission to enter the fairway • Do not say: “You may enter the fairway.” • Say: “ANSWER. You have permission to enter the fairway.”

  13. 일반 18. 애매한 단어 (Ambiguous words) • Might • Do not say: “I might enter the fairway.” • Say: “INTENTION. I will enter the fairway.” • Should • Do not say: “You should anchor in anchorage B3.” • Say: “ADVICE. Anchor in anchorage B3.” • Could • Do not say: “You could be running into danger.” • Say: “WARNING. You are running into danger.”

  14. 일반 18. 애매한 단어 (Ambiguous words) • 18.2 “can”“can”은 “가능성(possibility)”과 “할 수 있는 능력(capability of doing something)”으로 쓰인다. IMO SMCP에서는 “can”의 의미를 분명하게 하려 가능성(possibility)의 의미로 쓴다. • 항로에 진입허가를 원하면 이렇게 써라 • “QUESTION. Do I have permission to use the shallow draft fairway at this time? • Do not say: “Can I use the shallow draft fairway at this time?”
