We are the GGTC and while you are here with us you and your Family can know that we are doing our part to care for you because “Soldiers Matter!” Our facilities (administrative buildings, quarters, latrines, mess halls, etc.), when coupled with Fort Stewart’s resources (maneuver areas and firing ranges), makes us ideally situated to support the training of any unit or agency during their Inactive Duty for Training (IDT), Annual Training (AT), mobilization/demobilization, classes, or conferences. An additional resource available to GGTC is an experienced and dedicated civilian workforce representing men and women of all backgrounds. Together with their military counterparts, they are devoted to achieving excellence in those services we provide to ensure that all who come here to train are supported with the highest level of efficiency. 5. Georgia Garrison Training Center Our Transformation The GGTC is 1 of 109 Army National Guard Garrison Training Centers spread throughout the nation and territories. Since our inception, we were known primarily as the National Guard Training Center (NGTC) at Fort Stewart, GA. Since most sites were called National Guard Training Centers, each location was given its own identity and our name was changed to the Georgia Garrison Training Center on 1 October 2008. Until 1 August 2011 the Unit was still designated as the Training Site Detachment so its name changed to Georgia Garrison Training Center to align with the name of the Garrison. In 2007, our training center classification increased from a Collective Garrison Training Center (CTC) to a Maneuver Garrison Training Center– Light (MTC-L) by allowing Fort Stewart training resources to be factored into our capabilities. In 2015, our classification name changed to a Level III Training Center. This new designation by the National Guard Bureau standardized all Training Centers by capacity, capability and size from Level I-V. The role of our Garrison Command is to do what we do best; supporting Soldiers as they train in their mission to protect and defend our great nation. Besides being more responsive to these modern mission requirements, the GGTC is here to serve and support local communities. For instance, our classrooms, lodging facilities, Minuteman Chapel, and the Command Conference Center are all available to the public and to private organizations. We are a premier support organization, capable of interoperability with other branches of the military, state/ local governments, and the public. It is our commitment to you that while at the GGTC you will have the facilities, supplies, and logistical support you need to accomplish your mission and satisfy all of the important objectives of your visit. Our Vision Provide the best support, facilities and resources enabling customers to train in a realistic and cost effective environment. 3.

  8. History Georgia Garrison Training Center The National Guard keeps coming Responding to the challenge of change and war makes the National Guard America’s most enduring organization. In the past, like today, Fort Stewart has been subject to changes brought on by different missions and the cycles of war and relative peace, but the National Guard has always provided a constant and reliable presence here. One constant element of the local history here is the National Guard. Like our country, the National Guard has always had a presence here. The active Army comes and goes. Like the tide, they come in big and when they are here there is no mistaking their presence. But as the history shows, after they leave, the National Guard has remained. It is a known fact that the Guard can be counted on to keep on coming. In June 1940, Congress authorized the purchase of this coastal Georgia property and by November 1940, this Georgia Training Center was officially designated “Camp Stewart,” in honor of General Daniel Stewart, who had fought with General Francis Marion and his citizen soldier militia during the Revolutionary War. 6.

  9. Georgia Garrison Training Center History In 1941, the Carolina National Guard was conducting their Annual Training here. They were looking forward to their impending release to go home when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Active duty and National Guard units were shipped out and new Soldiers came to take their place. By 1944 more than 55,000 soldiers occupied Camp Stewart for the D-Day invasion and from here those units shipped out for England. The National Guard units departed and new units came in for training. Facilities were expanded and improved. In 1960, the Army leased to the National Guard what was then known as the National Guard Training Area (NGTA) which consisted of the “eastern chevron” of the Fort Stewart Garrison Complex. The construction of semi-permanent National Guard quarters was planned out as early as 1957. From 1959 to 1962, we built (out of concrete-masonry) mess halls, latrine and some administration buildings. What also remains to this day are the original World War II buildings built with wood sidings which are now covered in vinyl siding. In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F. Kennedy came to Fort Stewart and addressed the 1st Armored Division (the only divisional-sized Army ground unit actually deployed as a response to the Crisis) from the Georgia Garrison Training Center‘s Donovan Parade Field. It was only after the Cuban Missile Crisis ended that construction began on the barracks, which were not completely built out until the late 1970’s. President John F. Kennedy at GGTC Donovan Field (1963) 7.

  10. History Georgia Garrison Training Center In 1974 the Georgia National Guard was here to welcome the 24th Infantry Division and the active Army back to Fort Stewart. The 24th Infantry Division began their training on many of the same anti-aircraft ranges used by the Carolina Guard in 1941. In 1990-1991, more than 5,000 Georgia Army and Air National Guardsmen were mobilized to serve during the Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. It has been said that 9/11 started a transformation for the National Guard. That transformation continues to this day and will continue for the foreseeable future. The Guard has seen tremendous growth in its capabilities and missions, both at home and overseas, changing its role from a strategic reserve force to an operational force. The GGTC has served this country since 1960. It has a rich past and a bright future. It has distinguished itself with the hard work and patriotism of the Soldiers and dedicated civilians that work here and abide by this simple creed- “Serving the Best by Being the Best.” 8.
