Proposition #3: Transportation of All Students Shall the mileage limitations for transporting students continue to be set at zero to 15 miles from each student’s residence to the school he or she legally attends; or shall they revert to the minimum transportation requirements under the Education Law which only require that the District transport students in Kindergarten through eighth grade who live more than two miles from their school and students in ninth grade through twelfth grade who live more than three miles from their school, up to a maximum of fifteen miles from their school

Proposition #3: Transportation of All Students • Why do we need to vote on this, I thought we have always transported students regardless of how close they live to the school? • During recent research on transportation regulations and costs we discovered that a change in the laws in the early 1990s required that Districts have a one-time special vote if the community agrees to transporting all students regardless of their home distance from the school. Lansing never held the vote.

  4. Proposition #3: Transportation of All Students • How much will this cost? • There will be no additional cost, as it has always been the practice to transport all children at Lansing Schools.

Proposition #3: Transportation of All Students • What will happen if this proposition does not pass? • Households within 2 miles (for children in grades K-8) and 3 miles (for children in grades 9-12) will have to find alternate methods of getting their children to and from school • The District will not be able to provide these families with transportation.

  6. Proposition #4: Capital Reserve • Why do we need this? • A Capital Reserve is a savings account for monies to be used only for capital project costs. • Voters must approve its establishment, its life-span and the use of any monies from it when that time comes. • the term of the fund.

Proposition #4: Capital Reserve • Why do we need this? • This money can be used to offset the local share of capital construction costs so that such projects do not lead to increased taxes. • With this vote, you are only authorizing the District to create the fund, you are defining the amount of money that may be placed into it over the course of its term, and you are defining the term of the fund.

Proposition #4: Capital Reserve • How will it be funded? • Once the reserve is created, the School Board will be able to move money into it when that money becomes available • These funds come from revenues in excess of projections or when we are able to find savings in other places of the budget.

  9. Proposition #4: Capital Reserve • No additional taxes • We believe that through responsible, frugal budget management we will be able to direct funds into this reserve over the course of its life, but with this vote, you give the Board of Education the right to determine the best course for financing the reserve.

  10. Propositions Summary • Authorization to spend $26,000,000. • Purchase two large and one small school buses for $280,000 (no new taxes impact) • Transportation of All Students • Establish Capital Reserve of up to $1.5M ….also, Board of Education Member Election May 15, 2012 – 7am – 9pm
