Introduction • Alaska Coastal Management and Federal Coastal Zone Management Programs • Local governments given authority and funding to participate in managing land and water within the coastal zone • Influencing state and federal permitting • Influencing other activities and decision-making • Public education and outreach

Federal Coastal Zone Management Act (1972) • to preserve, protect, develop, and where possible, to restore or enhance the resources of the nation's coastal zone for this, and succeeding generations • to encourage and assist the state to effectively exercise its responsibilities in coastal management • consideration of ecological, cultural, historic, and aesthetic values, in light of needs for economic development

  4. Overview • Alaska Coastal Management Program • Networked state agencies and 35 coastal districts • Opportunities for public involvement • Projects are measured against State standards and coastal district standards

Community Values Economic Benefit Overview • The KPBCMP provides local input and guidance to state and federal agencies involved in developing projects, issuing permits or managing land in the coastal district, or other activities affecting resources of the district.
