  1. Analogies

  2. What is an analogy? • An analogy shows the relationship between pairs of words. • An analogy is set up as follows: • A is to B as C is to D (A : B :: C : D): The relationship between “A” and “B” is the same as the relationship between “C” and “D.”

  3. Example: • Calf : Cow :: Chick : Hen • A calf is the offspring of a cow, and a chick is the offspring of a hen.

  4. How do you complete Analogies? • You must first identify the relationship between the first pair of words. • Then, apply that relationship to the other pair of words.

  5. You try: • King : Wealthy :: Peasant : a. queen b. poverty c. rich d. poor • Answers “b” and “d” both refer to a peasant’s lack of money, but poor is an adjective that describes a peasant, just as wealthy is an adjective that describes a king. The correct answer would be “d.”

  6. You try: • Wallet : Money :: Book Bag : a. toothbrush b. clothing c. books d. mail • A wallet is used to carry money. A book bag is used to carry books. The correct answer is “c.”

  7. You try: • Coat : Clothing :: Pizza : a. electronics b. food c. drink d. furniture • A coat is a type of clothing, and pizza is a type of food. The best answer is “b.”

  8. You try: • Pen : Write :: Scissors : a. sharp b. grab c. correct d. cut • A pen is used to write. Answers “a” and “d” both refer to scissors, but cut is something that the scissors do, just as a pen writes.

  9. Tips: • When completing an analogy, the second portion of the analogy should be in the same order as the first. • For example: • Pen : Write :: Scissors : Cut (or) • Write : Pen :: Cut : Scissors
