  2. In the 700’s AD Japan developed a unique political culture A Japanese emperor ruled from Kyoto, a central city.

  3. But real power rested in a local warlord called a shogun.

  4. Local rulers had their own warriors called Samurai.

  5. Japan was largely cut off from the world until 1853 When US ships led by Commodore Matthew Perry arrived, helping to open up Japan for trade.

  6. The emperor began to modernize Japan, And the country soon grew into a modern industrial power.

  7. Japan began to invade other countries to meet its growing need for natural resources.

  8. By 1937 Japan had a huge empire. The Japanese signed a treaty with Germany and Italy in 1940.

  9. 1941 Japan entered WWII by attacking the US

  10. Japan surrendered in 1945 after the US dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

  11. Korea had been controlled by Japan until after WWII The peninsula was divided into North and South by the US and the USSR

  12. 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea, and the US sent soldiers by to defend South Korea.

  13. 1953 The war ended, and the two sides set up a peace line along the 38th parallel

  14. This is called the demilitarized zone And neither side governs it. No military may enter it.

  15. It is a fortified area and there are a lot of tensions on the border
