Historical Context of In the Shadow of the Banyan Historical/Social Context of Novel Shared Content Concepts and Information Unique to Novel • Civil war in Cambodia began in 1970 between Khmer Rouge and Khmer Republic • Khmer Rouge took over government in 1975 and adopted Communist ideas • Khmer Rouge targeted those who had any connection to the Western world: intellectuals, religious people, those with ethnicities other than Cambodian, and many more attributes • Over 25 percent of Cambodia’s population died in three years • Narrated by Raami, a seven year old girl, in Cambodia • Recurring motif of storytelling and poems • Writing style is rich and many descriptions are woven into story • Raami’s family is much smaller and her father is the oldest • Members of Khmer Rouge were questioned constantly • Cambodians were relocated to isolated villages • A somber tone with a mood of great loss and sadness
