In an effort to break discrimination against high school graduates, a series of support measures will be applied as they serve in the military or find employment, the labor ministry said. The benefits include placing male graduates from technical and other vocational high schools in positions that require their skills after finishing their military service. All able-bodied, young South Korean males are required to do their mandatory military duty for about two years. Employed male graduates will be allowed to delay their military service. The privilege has been only given to college students. Government agencies will also treat high school graduates equally with college graduates after working at those public offices for four years, the ministry said. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 2 -

Spa officials say taking a dip in the noodle bath is good for health as ingredients in the broth help improve the bather’s metabolism and cleanse the skin. ”At this bath, everybody can have fun and take advantage of the healthy elements of ramen noodles,” said a spa official. The 80-year-old poet was praised by the Swedish Academy for "giving us fresh access to reality through his condensed, translucent images." 19. 3 1 6 Issue & Debate ▶Reading Comprehension Cyber Money Trade Is exchanging cyber money for hard cash legal or illegal? The Supreme Court says it is legal, unless the cyber money is obtained through illegal online gambling by playing poker or other card games. Under this decision, the highest court acquitted two online gamers, who were accused for making nearly 20 million won by selling 234 billion won worth of cyber money to other gamers. They earned it in the popular online game Lineage. This ruling is stirring controversy of late. Opponents including parents’ associations are criticizing the decision. They are concerned that it will have negative effects on young students and teenagers since they are likely to misuse online computer games for making cash in an easy way. Online game operators and developers are also against the move. They have to compensate for the loss of the gamers’ cyber money in real cash when the cyber money of the gamers gets lost or disappears due to technical problems caused by the service providers. This causes financial loss for them. There are also concerns regarding the court’s ruling. A primary concern is that cyber money might be abused as a tool for illegal purposes such as money-laundering and fraud. On the other hand, proponents welcome the decision, claiming that it will help boost the local online game industry. It can have positive spill-over effects not only on the game industry but also on other information and communication industry sectors.” The ruling has brightened the future of the Korean game market,” said a professor at a university in downtown Seoul. “So far, the industry’s growth has been interrupted by tight regulations.” Besides, they also point out that banning the cyber money trade can be against the right of consumers the online gamers. Lineage’s cyber money is called ‘Aden’ and it is known to be traded clandestinely at a rate of one million Aden for 8,000 won. The total amount game money including Aden exchanged online in Korea was estimated at 1.5 trillion won last year. Experts raise their voice that what is important now is to find ways on how to minimize the side effects expected from the court decision, while making the best use of the merits from cashing cyber money. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 17 -

  22. 3 1 7 History ▶Reading Comprehension Toni Morrison Toni Morrison was born on February 18, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio. She was the second oldest of four children born to Ramah and George Wofford. She was not fully aware of racial divisions until she was in her teens. “When I was in first grade, nobody thought I was inferior. I was the only black in the class and the only child who could read,” she later told a reporter. She took Latin in school, and read many great works of European literature. She graduated from Lorain High School with honors in 1949. She continued her study in literature at Howard University in Washington, DC. She majored in English, and chose the classics for her minor. After graduating from Howard in 1953, she continued her education at Cornell University. She wrote her thesis on the works of Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner, and completed her master’s degree in 1955. She then moved to Texas to teach English at Texas Southern University. In 1970, her first novel “The Bluest Eye” was published. It told the story of a young African-American girl who believes her incredibly difficult life would be better if only she had blue eyes. The book received warm reviews, but it didn’t sell well. Her next novel Sula in 1973 explores good and evil through the friendship of two women who grew up together. The work was nominated for the American Book Award. In 1987, “Beloved,” one of her greatest masterpieces, was published. The novel explores love and the supernatural. The main character, a former slave, is haunted by her decision to kill her children rather than to see them become slaves. Three of her children survived, but her infant daughter died at her hand. For this spellbinding work, she won several literary awards, including the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. She became a professor at Princeton University in 1989, and continued to produce great works. In recognition of her contributions to her field, she received the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature, making her the first African-American to be selected for the award. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 20 -

  25. 3 1 8 Places In The News ▶Reading Comprehension Ireland -- A must-see Ireland’s capital city, Dublin, is becoming a popular tour site. However, tourists don’t have much information on how to enjoy their tour. There are many ways you can enjoy the tour in Dublin. First of all, there are many events held on streets. On March 12-17, the Irish tourist season opens with an ever-growing list of street attractions, performances and cultural events. One of the best events is the weekend-long Merrion Square funfair, featuring free access to bouncy castles and handouts of sausage rolls. Guinness brewery tour is also very popular. If you book online, it is 10 percent cheaper. It is worth it for no other reason than to enjoy your tour-ending pint of the stout from the brewery’s panoramic rooftop bar which offers the best view of Dublin. Trinity College is also a must-see for the tourists. It is Ireland’s oldest academic institution with one of the biggest libraries in Europe. Ireland’s most famous book, the painstakingly illustrated “Book of Kells,” is in this library. You can also enjoy the antique buildings in the university. It would be very useful if a tourist obtains a Dublin Pass. Dublin Pass offers entry to more than 30 attractions and restaurant discounts. It also provides you a free city guidebook for a flat fee. Ireland is the third-largest island in Europe, and the 20th largest island in the world. It lies to the north-west of continental Europe and next to Great Britain. It is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. Politically, the state Ireland (described as the Republic of Ireland) covers five-sixths of the island, while Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, covers the other sixth. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 23 -

  28. 3 1 9 TOEFL Reading ▶Reading Comprehension Early Autos In the beginning of the 20th century, there were few automobiles. They were called horseless carriages at that time. They were considered frivolous playthings of the rich. They were fragile machines that sputtered and smoked and broke down often. They were expensive toys that could not be counted on to get one where one needed to go. They could only be afforded by the wealthy class, who could afford both the expensive upkeep and the inherent delays that resulted from the use of a machine that tended to break down. These early automobiles required repairs so frequently because their engineering was at an immature stage and roads were unpaved. When automobiles broke down, there were no services such as roadside gas stations or tow trucks to help drivers. Drivers of horse-drawn carriages considered the horseless carriages foolhardy. They preferred to rely on their four-legged engines. They considered them a tremendously more dependable and cost-effective means of getting around. Automobiles of the beginning of the 20th century were not like today’s ones. Many were electric cars. They had a limited range and needed to be recharged frequently at electric charging stations. Many others were powered by steam. Drivers were certified steam engineers because there were inherent dangers in operating steam-powered engines. Makers of early automobiles did not pay attention to body design. They were little more than benches on wheels. By the end of the first decade of the century, however, they made some progress. They had leather chairs or sofas on thin wheels that absorbed little of the incessant pounding caused by the movements of the machines. Over time, more people used the early horseless carriages. In 1900, some 5,000 automobiles were sold in the United States. In 1910, about 181,000 cars were sold. By the 1920s, automobile manufacturing had become the top industry in the U.S. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 26 -

  31. 3 1 10 Economy ▶Reading Comprehension Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs Mark Zuckerberg, an American computer programmer and Internet entrepreneur, is best known for co-creating the social networking site Facebook. Facebook was co- founded as a private company in 2004 by Zuckerberg and classmates Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and Chris Hughes while they were students at Harvard University. Zuckerberg asked Steve Jobs about how to build a high-quality team and great products, but denied Apple and Facebook ever talked about an acquisition. “No. I don’t think it ever really got there,” he said. “I mean, nor would I have wanted to sell it.” Zuckerberg said no when asked, in a TV interview with PBS, whether Facebook will ever build games. He said that he thinks of Google+ as “their own little version of Facebook” when asked what he thought about Google+. "I had a lot of questions for him on how to build a team around you,” he said in response to one of the questions by reporters. “That’s focus on building as high quality and good things as you are. How to keep an organization focused, right, when I think the tendency for larger companies is to try to fray and go into all these different areas,” he said when asked about the relationship with Jobs. Zuckerberg professed respect for Apple because, like Facebook, it is out to build a company that will change the world rather than fatten the bottom line. Jobs never raised the issue because he understood that Zuckerberg had no interest in selling. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 29 -

Entering the contest at 4.71 meters, Isinbayeva easily cleared the bar at her first attempt. Unlike in Berlin, where her dream to win a third consecutive world title was shattered as she failed at 4.75m and then twice at 4.80m, she had no trouble with her next jump at 4.81m this time. The Russian pole vaulter won the competition when Poland’s world champion Anna Rogowska failed at 4.86m. But the best part of the competition was when she cleared 5.06m, again at the first attempt, to break the outdoor record for the 15th time. Isinbayeva beat her previous record of 5.05m at the Beijing Olympic Games on her way to the gold medal last year. The 27-year-old had won the last four global titles, claiming gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and 2005 and 2007 world championships. In 2005, she became the first female pole vaulter to leap over five meters in 2005. ”In Berlin, I only had three jumps so I felt fresh; I was aiming for the record,” Isinbayeva told the crowd at Letzigrund Stadium. “I was surprised it was so easy,” Isinbayeva said. “It feels great. It’s really unbelievable just after such a great defeat in Berlin, but I’m happy that I was defeated. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be so hungry for the world record.” ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 41 -

  46. 3 2 5 Culture ▶Reading Comprehension Kimchi Seen as mainstream menu in the U.S. New York Daily News reports Korean food kimchi will be mainstream menu in 2012. A side dish accompaniment to every Korean meal, kimchi is a fiery, spicy, fermented cabbage marinated in red chili powder, garlic and ginger, akin to German sauerkraut. According to international restaurant consultancy group Baum + Whiteman in New York, Korean cuisine is predicted to emerge as a robust, influential global food trend in 2012, with its distinctive, punchy flavors penetrating mainstream menus. Kimchi is what baguettes are to the French or what pasta is to the Italians that is, indispensable. A few popular applications include stuffing the condiment into barbecued, pork sandwiches as an Asian-style slaw, a natural combination given that kimchi and pork also make up the main ingredients in another authentic Korean dish, kimchi stew. French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and his half-Korean wife Marja have also been spreading the Korean culinary gospel this year in their PBS series Kimchi Chronicles. 49. 3 2 6 Issue & Debate ▶Reading Comprehension China’s One-Child Policy The Chinese government has been implementing the so-called “one-child” policy since 1979 as a measure to deal with the social and environmental problems that come from overpopulation. The policy is enforced in the form of imposing fines considering the income level of the family. However, the policy is raising controversy due to concerns about negative economic and social consequences. Opponents of one-child policy insist that it is against the law of nature and basic human rights of reproduction and founding a family. They are also concerned that Chinese women are often forced to abort their children even if they don’t want to, although it is officially banned by the government. This violates human rights. Another big problem caused by one-child policy is the worsening of gender imbalance. Since the Chinese has a strong tradition of son preference, one-child policy often makes families abandon female infants. This can make many Chinese men unable to get married. On the other hand, proponents stress that China’s one-child policy is crucial to keep the global population growth since China takes one fifth of the world’s population. They say that without the one- child policy, the world would face serious problems from overpopulation. They also insist that stabilization of population can improve the living standards of Chinese people of today and the future. This is good, especially for young Chinese people. In addition, one-child policy is good for the environment since it can help fight against global warming and the depletion of natural resources. A Chinese government official once said that the one-child policy would be reconsidered. However, the policy seems likely to remain for at least more than a decade, according to Chinese population authorities. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article. - 47 -
