Supporting your choice for theme requires multiple examples from the novel. Theme In the novel The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, the main character, Ponyboy, learns that his beliefs about the Socs are not entirely accurate. Through the violent death of two of his friends he learns the painful truth people are more alike than different and that stereotypes lead to violence,”. . .Just don’t forget that some of us watch sunsets too.” Johnny pleads with Ponyboy to “Stay gold” , to not succumb to the violent Greaser stereotype. Theme is the author’s message or underlying purpose in writing a story, novel, or play.
