  1. Using consuls Keyword Search Tool

  2. About Consuls • Library Catalog that lists all of CSU’s materials • Can locate books at all 4 CSU libraries • Searches all media- books, periodicals, other media • You may search by keyword, title, author, subject, or for more specific results, advanced search

  3. Why Use Consuls? • Gives you location and availability of materials • Have entire CSU collection at fingertips • Able to locate relevant materials for research

  4. Purpose of this lesson • To be able to successfully utilize the ‘keyword’ search of the Consuls system

  5. Step One • Access school library’s webpage (for this purpose, SCSU) • Go to url: http://www.library.southernct.edu/

  6. Step Two • Access Consuls~ there is a quick-link on the library’s home page (it is the search bar) • Choose the ‘keyword’ option, which is the first choice given

  7. Step Three • Pick one or two of your already chosen keywords • Make sure the term(s) you choose are what you think will yield the most accurate results pertaining to your topic • Make sure to choose which library you want to use, since for this lesson we will be using our own (SCSU) • We also want to sort by “relevance”, in order to yield the most pertinent information • Hit “submit” when ready

  8. Step Four • Choose the title you feel is most relevant to your research • If you feel the particular title is relevant, click on the title, which is a link

  9. Step Five • At this stage, we have several options • We may place the title on hold by clicking request, or may ‘save record’ to go back to at a later time • For this purpose, we want to determine the location by clicking on the title, to display the below information

  10. Determining Location As we can see, the location of this book is in SCSU Reference, but is only available for in-library use The call number is how the title is cataloged By using the location and call number, we can locate the book within the library

  11. Step Six- End of Lesson • Retrieve book! • Using the keyword search tool option, you have successfully located research materials • You should now have an understanding on how to search using keywords in Consuls
