  3. What WWF-UK does

  4. 25,000 20,000 15,000 Earth's capacity to absorb CO2 million tonnes per year 10,000 5,000 0 1750 1800 1850 1900 1950 2000 World CO² emissions from fossil fuels

  5. The climate is already changing, faster than expected

  6. “Millions at Risk” We must stay below 2oC

  7. A challenge for business “If we continue to do things in the world in the same way as we do today, it will not be so easy for this planet to cope. We need a more intelligent society where we cannot just triple travel and triple cars and triple planes and triple everything. We need to find other ways of working.” Carl-Henric Svanberg, Chief Executive, Ericsson

  8. WWF is not against flying BUT: • Aviation is a significant contributor to Climate Change today • It could produce 35% of global CO2 by 2050 • Non-CO2 effects double the climate change impact • A higher percentage of UK emissions than worldwide: we produce more air travel emissions per head than any other country Can we meet UK—and global—carbon reduction targets if aviation continues to grow?

  9. The business case for flying less • Save money - more profit • Gain time – increase productivity • Less carbon – improve CR profile • Greater wellbeing – happier staff • Keep connected – ‘telepresence’

  10. Travelling light(WWF, 2008) Key findings – FTSE 350 89% - expect to fly less over the next 10 years 85% - videoconferencing could reduce business flying 89% - videoconferencing could improve productivity 75% - government should encourage videoconferencing 77% - expect to travel more by rail

  11. The One in Five Challenge • Helps business and government reduce their flying by 20%, within 5 years • Challengers receive: • Help and support to monitor business flights and quantify cost and carbon savings • Special branding • Public recognition • Challengers are encouraged to: • Use more videoconferencing and rail • Incentivise staff to use alternatives to flying
