  2. WWII EVENTS - Pacific • 1931 – 1941: Japan begins empire building by conquering Asian lands.

  3. Dec. 1941 – Japanese attack Pearl Harbor to destroy any U.S. threat of attack; U.S. declares war on Japan. • April 1942 – Allies surrender in Philippines; Bataan Death march begins as prisoners of war are treated brutally.

  4. June 1942 – Allies defeat Japan in Battle of Midway destroying Japan’s fleet and turning the tide of the war.

  5. Feb. 1943 – Japanese abandon the island of Guadalcanal. Both Japan and Allied forces suffer horrible losses.

  6. March 1945 – Allies capture Iwo Jima; both sides suffer horrible losses.

  7. Storming of the beach on Iwo Jima

  8. June 1945 – Allies capture Okinawa; both sides suffer horrible losses. Facing countless island battles and more devastating losses, Truman and the United States make the ultimate decision – use of atomic weapons.

  10. EFFECTS ON HIROSHIMA • Little Boy ended up killing between 130,000 to 150,000 people. • The bomb leveled Hiroshima to the ground. It exploded with the force of 12,000 tons of TNT. The heat from the explosion exceeded 50 million degrees Fahrenheit at the center of the fireball.
