  2. What was the Civil Rights Movement? Was the fight for equal opportunities in jobs, housing, and education for African Americans. Was also the fight against segregation

  3. Jim Crow Laws • Review Question: What were Jim Crow laws? • Answer: Laws that required African Americans and whites to be separated in almost every way. • Jim Crow = Segregation

  4. “Separate but equal” • 1896 Plessy V. Ferguson : Supreme Court case upholds that “separate but equal” is OK, is the justification for Jim Crow laws • 1954 Brown v. Board of Education: Overturns Plessy, "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." Paves the way for school integration and the Civil Rights movement • *** Only desegregated schools***

  8. African Americans in Montgomery, Alabama boycotted the buses for 1 year • Ultimately led to a Supreme Court decision Which desegregated all forms of public transportation • Dr. Martin Luther King became a leader in the Civil Rights movement

The Civil Rights Movement • Resulted in laws that ensured constitutional rights to all citizens regardless of race • Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Outlawed Racial discrimination against men and women and made all forms of segregation illegal • Voting Rights Act of 1965 • outlawed discriminatory voting practices (no more literacy tests)
