  2. What does Hazara mean? • Hazara refers to people in Afghanistan, who are of the Mongol descent, and have slant/small eyes and button nose • They are Persian-speaking people, who live in the mountains of central Afghanistan

  3. Who are the hazaras? • Hazaras are oe of 7 million ethnic groups in Central Afghanistan • They speak their own version of Farsi known as Hazaragi • The Hazara are the second largest ethnic group in Afghanistan • Politically, economically and socially the most underdeveloped group in Afghanistan society • The Hazaras are mostly Shi’as Muslims

Big name hazaras • Ali Dost Khan ( Brigadier General ) – Known for being a talented military officer in the British Indian Army in the 1920’s • Barat Ali Taj – Representative of the Hazaras in the struggle for democracy in Afghanistan during King Zahir Shahs rule, he was one of the founders of the first democratic organization • Bunyad Khan Hazara – The son of Mohammad Shah of heart • Gul Mohammad Khan Hazara – Brave soldier from JaghuriHazara who fought against the Saqa Forces

  5. Interesting facts about hazara • The percentage of Hazarus in Kabul, Afghanistan is approximantly 40% • Hazaras mostly do not belong to Shia muslims, however many Hazaras belong to the Sunni and Ismaili sections

  6. What role do women play in the hazaras society • Hazara women are a big part of the Hazara society • HizbWahdat – Only political organization in Afghanistan that has 10 women on its Central Committee • There are more women students then there is male in

  7. Hazarakight fighting • Common form of recreation among Afghan men of all ages ( Why they named the book kite runner? ) • This was banned by the Taliban, but the sport reemerged under the county’s new democratic government • Dangerous because of the lines and how sharp and dangerous they are
