  2. HABITAT • HABITAT • The narwhals migrate to Davis Strait and south Baffin Bay. • Narwhals live in the cold icy waters of the Arctic seas. • They mostly stay far away from ice. • In the summer narwhals infrequently enter a wide mouth of a river that goes to the sea.

  3. FOOD • FOOD • Narwhals eat lots of marine animals like fish, squid, shrimp, polar cod, flounder, green halibut,cuttle fish and crab. • The narwhals use echolocation to find their food and to see where they’re going. • Narwhals can stay underwater for as long as 15 min. • Narwhals always swallow their food whole because they can not chew.

  4. CHARACTERISTICS • The Inuit name for the narwhal is Qilalugat tugaliit. • Narwhal’s skin is mottled dark grey, not as much grey on the sides and a white belly. • The ivory in the male narwhal’s tusk is prized for carving. • The female narwhal has no tusk.

  5. LIFE CYCLE • A Narwhal’s usual life span is up to 50 years. • The narwhal ‘s upper left tooth usually becomes the tusk. • The baby narwhal stays with her mother for about a year. • The babies height is about 1.5 meters and weighs about 80 kilograms.

  6. ENEMIES • Their natural enemies are polar bears. • Their main enemies are man because they use there oil for lot of human uses. • Lots of Narwhals are attacked by polar bears. • Scientists use Narwhals oil for scientific uses too.

  7. INUIT USES • The ivory in a male Narwhals tusk is useful for carving. • People now don’t really use Narwhal tusks for carving because they don’t like taking them away from animals like elephants. • A long time ago Inuit brought as much tusk ivory they needed and sold it. • The other animal they use tusks for carving is the elephant.

  8. BABIES • A normal baby Narwhal’s height is about 1.5 meters and weighs about 80 kilograms.
