  4. Circulation Policy • Books 3 weeks • Renewals 3 weeks • You must be enrolled at MTC to check out library materials

  5. Fines and Fees • Photocopies $.10 • Microfilm $.10 • Overdues $.10 a day per book • Overdue Reserves $.50 a day per item

  6. Magazines Vs. Journals • Periodicals are often divided into two major categories: Popular Magazines or Scholarly Journals • It is important to know the difference • between the two!

  7. Journals • present the results of original research, conference proceedings, or offer a review of the literature to professionals or scholars in a given field • Intended for specialized readers who are scholars or professionals • Have a plain appearance.  May contain graphs, charts or tables

Journals • highly technical and may contain jargon specific to the author’s field • published by or in association with an academic institution or a professional organization • contain little or no advertising • Sources are cited in a bibliography • Examples: • American Journal of Nursing • Critical Care Nurse • Nursing

Magazines • provide articles generally designed to inform or entertain and to sell advertising • Intended for a mass audience or general readership • Designed to be attractive and appealing with much use of color, graphics, and illustrations • Presented in a non-technical, easy to read, style
