  2. The topping • What is the difference between the abstract & the introduction?

  3. The abstract • write this last • 100-200 words (one paragraph) • a summary of the project • include your conclusion

  4. The introduction • Here you are preparing your reader for what follows … • 500 words (= two sides double spaced)

  5. What should be included…? • Set the scene • Provide some background • Explain your topic’s importance • Explain the problem you are setting out to solve • Explain your parameters – outline your scope • Do not provide any conclusions

  6. The tailing • What is the difference between a conclusion and an evaluation?

  7. The conclusion • In the introduction you set a problem • Now you need to reach a conclusion. • Make a judgement. • provide a clear and well-developed summary of the case that you have made. • You should also comment on the significance of your results: ‘This view point has wider implications for … because….’ • Finally, you MUST make several well-thought out suggestions for the further work or research you would do if you had the time.

The evaluation • Use ‘I’ in this section. • So … did it all work out as per your original plan? • Identify & analyse your successes & strengths • Identify & analyse your limitations & weaknesses • What will you do differently next time? Why? • How useful has the whole EPQ been to you? What have you learned from the whole process of researching and writing a dissertation, and how will this help you in the future? • Overall, have you enjoyed it?
